Ronald's Story
Life After graduation: Early in February 1967, some will recall I was off to the Army for the next 23 years. Nam 1967-68; second tour 1970-71 as helicopter pilot with Air Cav; lots of night school with University of Maryland and Florida State University, then a year full time, culminating in graduating (somehow -- summa cum laude) from Troy State University in 1979. Overseas tours with the Army included Panama, Germany, military attache in Honduras (1982-85). Then, a year as a student at the Command & General Staff Course taught in spanish at the U.S. Army School of the Americas (no my liberal friends -- and I love your good hearts dearly -- no torture was taught). Actually we tried to share with Latin American officers how to "spell" and practice democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights. Some just didn't listen very well. Afterwards, the Army sent me to "spy on the US Navy"...I attended the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterrey, California in 1987 (M.A. National Security Affairs, Western Hemisphere).
In 1989, as a Major, I was appointed officer in charge of a national program focused on Latin America.
In 1990 I was offered and accepted a job with an aerospace sales firm and left the Army after 23 years service.
In 1992, I returned to government service, this time joining the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) as a civilian "democratic governance development officer and programs manager". I subsequently served with USAID in Honduras (1992-96), Dominican Republic (1996-2002), Kathmandu, Nepal (2002-2004), Bogota, Colombia (2005-2007), Afghanistan (2007-2009), Russia (2010-2012).
In September of 2009 I began a full-time Russian language course at the State Department's National Foreign Area Training Center in Arlington, Virgina. In the summer of 2010, I was posted to USAID in Moscow, Russia where I was Director of the USAID Democratic Initiat...Expand for more
ives office, an office within the US Embassy that assists Russian partner organizations work through considerable challenges in strengthening respect for human rights, judicial strengthening, fostering more independent media, providing participation of youth in political and electoral process strengthening programs, and promoting and facilitating participation of civil society organizations in national policy dialogue discussions in these same democratic governance development areas.
In September of 2011, it seems the Kremlin got spooked by Russian civil society's "catastrophic success" in documenting election violations, and the Kremlin told Hillary Clinton that the USAID democracy governance activities were unwelcome, and indeed, all of USAID in Russia had to be shut down. I was subsequently posted in April of 2012 to another democracy and human rights challenged country, as Director of the Embassy's Democracy and Governance Office in Baku, Azerbaijan. I retired from USAID in 2013 with plans to pursue screenplay writing and some acting, did a Pharrel music video (24hoursofhappy 12:12pm), but was called back to development work as Director of a Honduras violence prevention program (2014-Jun 2015), and subsequently as Director of Criminal Justice System Strengthened Project in the Dominican Republic. Departed Dominican Republic in October 2018 and am semi-retired.
I'm a proud Dad of four children from two marriages (last marriage with Gloria is coming up on 34 years , together)...and we now have seven grandchildren, five boys and two girls.
Life has been and still is good...and I look back fondly on the good years, innocent years and friends from CHS.
Ok...not all the CHS friends were so 'innocent'. But we were great kids, and for the most part are not doing so bad as adults. A hug to the guys and kisses to the ladies :)
Best Regards and Warmest Wishes to all
Ron.
