Ron's Story
Life
My Spouse
I knew who she was (Gerry Ann Crawford)from her early years at GHS but only really met her in 1971-working a stage production of "Man of La Mancha". We married in September of 1972. Wow, time really does fly when you're having fun.
My Kids
Geoff, the oldest, is a graduate of LSU and is an Engineer. He works for an engineering consulting firm in Memphis, TN. His work takes him from coast to coast and to Europe as well. He married a beautiful girl from Alexandria, LA who also graduated from LSU and their daughter, Carmen Elise, was born 12/17/08. Geoff used to play goalkeeper on an adult, competitive soccer team in Houston, but after a concussion, a pin inserted in his index finger and a blown ACL he finally called it quits. Stephen, the 2nd, graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in finance. He moved to Toronto, Canada and married a beautiful Canadian girl with a son from a previous marriage on 9/26/04. They had a little girl named Samantha on July 5, 2007. Stephen works for Investors Group of Canada as a mutual funds manager. Katie, the youngest, still lives in Kingwood. She works for the YMCA in their afterschool day care program and really loves taking care of the young children.
My Job
After getting a Masters Degree in Social Work from Univ. of Southern MS, I spent a few years working for the MS Dept. of Public Welfare, but figured out that wasn't for me. In the mid 1980's I was on the start-up team of Mississippi Chemical's papermill in Grenada, MS; and in 1992 moved to Houston to work for Champion International's Paper Mill as the Human Resource Manager. After a couple of mergers it was finally owned by Abitibi Consolidated, a large company based in Montreal,Quebec, Canada, and in 2002 Abitibi closed all its Texas assets. I was offered a position in Snowflake, AZ but chose to bypass that offer and make a career change. I immediately went to work for CenterPoint Energy Inc., a pipeline, gas and electric energy delivery company as Corporate Director of Labor Relations. I am responsible for labor negotiations with 8 labor unions in Texas and Minnesota as well as maintaining all other facilities in MS, AR, OK, LA and TX as non-union facilities. It keeps me busy.
Travel
We've visited all the major cities in the U.S. and Canada and quite a few small towns as well. New York City and San Francisco are two of our favorites. Napa Valley and Yosemite National Park are great spots as well. Gerry and I finally made it to Europe in 2008 when we took a two week tour of Italy. Fantastic country! Loved Rome, Florence and Venice, but the Isle of Capri was my favorite.
Hobbies--
Love photography and am working on building that into a post-retirement career as a free lance photographer. Still playing the drums too. Bought a new set in 2008 and have joined with a couple of guys playing 60's--70's--and 80's pop/rock. We've done a few gigs around Houston and hoping to do more.
