Roy's Story
Military
Master Sergeant Roy McCollum supervised the training schedules for 2,000 Component personnel from 13 NATO nations. He was responsible to the Training Wing Commander for the timely scheduling of aircrew replacement personnel and ensured correct lead times are established for all new arrivals. He directed quota allocation/scheduling of Component personnel for NATO School Oberammergau and Communications School Latina. He managed the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) and non-FMS courses with an annual budget of $444,000. He was the Component manager for training acquisition projects and approved requests for geographically separated training. His additional duties included; Terminal Area Security Officer, TW Automated Data Processing Representative, and Local Area Network (LAN) Manager.
MSgt McCollum grew up just outside of Palm Springs, California where he attended school and graduated from Coachella Valley High School in 1973. He enlisted in the Air Force in Kansas City, Missouri in 1978. During his career he performed duties in three different career fields; Munitions Maintenance, ÃÂBack-shopÃÂ Avionics Technician, and Education & Training Management. While in Munitions Maintenance, he built, maintained, and stored various conventional/unconventional munitions, from 5.56mm ammunition to heavy bombs. While an Avionics Technician for the F/FB-111, he personally maintained the Communications & Navigation systems and later directed the maintenance of the all Electronic Warfare Systems aboard the aircraft. As a Training Manager, he created and established numerous courses of instruction needed by personnel at his duty location as well as assisting in the development of Air Force policy on training. HeÃÂs been assigned to bases in Texas, Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico. He has also served overseas in the United Kingdom, Turkey, and Germany.
