Roy's Story

Although I did graduate, I missed graduation because I was in North Dakota, getting married at the exact same time as the graduation ceremony for TCHS. Afterwards I stayed in North Dakota for 15 years where I worked on farms driving all types of equipment and eventually became a truck driver. I even learned to fly so I became a pilot. While in ND I had no choice but develop good work habits because that's all those people do in North Dakota; work. Being from Texas I could not believe how different life is in the north. For instance when people of North Dakota die in the winter they cannot be buried until the spring because the ground freezes. Gas also freezes, as do tires on the cars. But as harsh as ND was, my wife and I obtained our educations in ND. As I was driving semi-trucks across the country, I put my wife through nursing school. Admittedly I was concerned about going to college because I had been out of HS for 10 years and had a wife and 4 children. But from trying to earn a living in ND I learned how to work and I knew very few could out work me. I applied the same work ethic and kept in mind something classmate Vickie Tennet had told me back in 10th grade. She said, "Roy I am not smarter than everyone else, ...Expand for more
I just work harder". I took that to heart, and being to stupid to know better, I applied myself in college.graduating in just over 3 years, magna cum laude (I was told that means "not bad grades") in just over 3 years with a bachelor of accounting degree. I took and passed the CPA exam and entered Law School, graduating with a juris doctor's degree from South Texas College of Law. Meanwhile I have also enjoyed life. I love to travel, hunt, fish and coach my sons (and my two grandson) in sports. While hunting I have had the fortune to be able to backpack more than 10 miles into the wilderness and mountains of Montana and Colorado, hunting bear and elk with a bow and arrow. I was fortunate to help coach my oldest son in boxing and work his corner. He was good enough that he was offered a professional contract. He had two professional fights but injured his shoulder while putting in a fireplace and had to retire. Although my wife Laurie and I took the road less traveled, (and boy was it hard) I love being a lawyer (and my wife loves being a RN). I have met many fine people in the course of practicing law. Unbelievably my wife has put up with me for 40 years as of May 31. Give me a shout out, I am not shy like I used to be.
