CLASS OF 1980

Roy's Story

Life Life is what you make of it. I spent most of my life in Houston, but it was time for a change. After High School, I joined the Navy (see my Military Life) and retired after 21+ years. During my time in the Navy, I got to travel quite a bit (all 7 continents, 42 countries, and 38 states). That is the part that I miss the most. I have two kids, a daughter that is working on her Master Degree in Healthcare Administration, and a son that is working on his Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering. I currently work for a major defense contractor, which is a challenging but enjoyable job. In my spare time (which there is not enough of) I like to go mountain biking, camping, and scuba diving. I have few regrets, but I don't let them run my life. I was married for 22+ years, now I have joined the ranks of the divorced. Life goes on! Military After graduating High School in 1980, I wasn't sure what I was going to do, either work or go to school. But, I had some growing up to do, so I joined the Navy. It was some of the best times in my life (had to be I spent 21+ years there). I went to Boot Camp in Orlando Florida on my birthday, then, it was on to San Diego California for H-3 Helicopter training (Jet Engine Mechanic). From there I asked for the Philippines or Hawaii, but instead went to Atsugi Japan. Did not spend much time there since, I was assigned to Helicopter Combat Support Squadron One, Detachment Six (HC-1 Det 6) in support of Commander Seventh Fleet onboard the USS Blue Ridge. I visited many different countries during my time there. It was there that I met my wife (also in the Navy), and had a daug...Expand for more
hter (Nina). In the mid 80’s we were transferred to Naval Air Station Lemoore California and assigned to the Power Plants Division (Jet Engine Repair). My son (Alain) was born there. It was time for one of us to make a decision, since we were both due to transfer to Sea Duty. My wife decided to get out and raise the kids and go back to school. And I decided to it was time for a different career path. After Lemoore, I chose to train as a C-130 Flight Engineer. 9 months later I finished all the required schooling, from there, I took orders to Antarctic Development Squadron Six (VXE-6) based in Point Mugu California. VXE-6 supported the National Science Foundations operation in Antarctica. After VXE-6, I transferred to the Naval Reserve to continue my flying career. My first reserve squadron was Fleet Logistics Support Squadron Fifty Four (VR-54) based in New Orleans Louisiana, then on to VR-55 based in Alameda California then we moved to Santa Clara California. The Fleet Logistics Support Squadrons supported Worldwide Fleet Operations, in other words when the fleet need something, we delivered it. After my time in the squadrons I was selected to be the Flight Engineer Evaluator for the controlling wing Fleet Logistics Support Wing which is based at NAS JRB Fort Worth Texas. After 3 years it was time to move again, but it was not going to happen. I promised my kids, that we would stay where we were at, since they were in High School. After moving so much throughout my career, it was time to call it quits. I retired on my daughter’s birthday in 2001. After that I went to work for Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth.
