Roy's Story
I was 15 years old when i graduated in 1977, 3 hours after graduation i was sworn into the military, did first tour active duty then went national guard, worked for Missouri pacific several years until Union Pacific RR bought us out and the layoffs hit. Left that job and went trucking, I would truck a couple years come home and go to school. It made it possible to get my bachelors in engineering and 12 other technical diplomas. During this time my life was divided between heavy equiptment and trucking. I owned my own trucking company so i also hauled heavy equiptment. I did this 21 years. I also operated the worlds largest equiptment in Cyprus Bagdad Copper Mine, did highway construction, worked on all types of diesel and gas equiptment. also was a pipeline welder. Military let me see 6 foreign countries and trucking let me see the lower 48 states many times over, Canada and Mexico. I have crossed the United States from Long Island New York to San Diego many times non stop, my last truck haul was Long Island New York to San Diego California where i downloaded, traveled 240 mile south to San Lois Abispo California then back to Muskogee Oklahoma barely making it in time for Chris...Expand for more
tmas dinner. 86 hours non stop except for fuel. The next day i hung up trucking. A month later i started work again as a structural engineer for Donrey Outdoor Advertizing, i know everyone remembers the hugh billboards with Donrey on the bottom. Retired from there May 28th 1998. There isn't much i haven't seen or done in my life time. I have owned 6 houses, lived in 7 states, fished and hunted all over the west, owned 37 motorcycles and rode coast to coast 4 times on them with friends, seen sturgis 4 times, had 5 sons and 6 wives. i know glutton for punishment aren't i? I live in Boynton Oklahoma now, bought a 395 acre ranch with 2 homes on it, raise brahma longhorn crosses and cover them with charolais bulls. I farm 2000 acres with a friend, work cattle and bale hay to keep myself busy. The slower pace agrees with me. I've come full circle, in high school, i worked for 4 ranchers all at the same time doing just what i am now, never had time to socialize in school i was out making 600 a week back then and getting ready to go see what the army had for me. 52 years old now and wish i had done a few things different. Would like to know what became of old friends i knew in school.
