Ruby's Story

I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a very appropriate idea. As it turns out, they were right. I just didn't become the traditional school teacher. My biggest dream from my seventeenth birthday was to marry my sweetheart, Ron Campbell. We had a perfect relationship and decided to marry after I finished business school. We wed the summer after graduation. He was drafted into the army two months later and I was so grateful for the education I had gotten. My first job was as a bookkeeper and I lived independently. He was in Korea for two years. Upon his return, we bought a house and could finally begin the family we had wanted. I had four babies in a five year span and then the bottom fell out of the dream and we parted. Thank God for my family. The kids were happy and thirty-five years ago I met and married a wonderful man. He became Dad. I was allowed the luxury of being a stay at home mom. When my youngest was fifteen, I went to work for the City of Spokane and had several positions including Office of International Development, and Public Defenders and fin...Expand for more
ally became the Office Supervisor in the Prosecutor's Office. It was such fun and my husband and I were raising our Grandson. He is currently twenty-one, a junior in college and living with us. That is why I think my original dream came to fruition. I am forty-one consecutive years with a child in my house and my husband is still crazy about us both. I feel so blessed that all my children, seventeen grandchildren, and my mother and siblings are still living and in good health when I talk to others I meet. Have lived in the same old farm house since l774 and we would love to downsize. Life's to short to spend the rest of it working. I have never lived anywhere but Spokane, but my son is in Arizona and my daughter on the coast. We were lucky not to have to move away to secure work as my kids saw their aunts, uncles and grandparents everyday and we haven't had that luxury, but am proud they sprouted wings and went to good jobs. The great thing is two of my children are traditional teachers. My daughter has a Master's my oldest son a PHD,, so am proud that I had the dreams of youth and helped mold many fine people.
