Rudy's Story
Worked my way through Olympic College and Central Washington State playing rock and roll with The Titans. Starved most of the time, but was drum major and newspaper editor at Olympic--also took my first fencing class at OC. Minor student leader at CWSC, spent a week hanging with a young Timothy Leary and Alan Watts. Wrote my first music that got played in concert. Waldie Anderson of CWSC introduced me to Interlochen -- hitchiked there in 1964 to be on the staff--ended up on the faculty for three years.
Got a full ride to DePauw University in 1967 -- came back and spent the summer of '67 in Traverse City playing rock and roll and discovering all the inner meanings of the Beatles and Sgt. Pepper (G). At DePauw played in a group wtih Jim Ibbottson of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band fame.
Jobs were scarce with a masters in music composition -- became a high-steel painter and did that for three years, primarily in the South -- tanks, towers, bridges, factory ceilings. Married my college sweetheart, got a job at Albany State College in Albany, GA. Had a miserable time, went back to playing rock and roll, growing my hair, etc. Moved to Atlanta and toured with Phoenix Rising for a few years (took its toll on the marriage, which ended). Also did a lot of construction on the side.
Finally got back to education--taught at Brenau College for about 12 years -- started a local community band, and then the local symphony (both are still going strong). Throughout all this, had been fencing--reorganized fencing in the Atlanta area in the early '70's--became a decent sabrist and administrator (chair of the Southeast Section -- 8 SE states--of the national organi...Expand for more
zation).
Elbow injury in 1982 took me out of national (and even local) fencing for twenty years.
Went back to school in 1985-finished my doctorate at University of South Carolina in 1987, took job as chair of music department of Paine College in 1986. Been in Augusta, GA ever since. On the side, was tuba player and associate conductor of the symphony for a few years, then started my own chamber orchestra in a nearby town when that quit. After that started and conducted a really good 18-piece bigband jazz organization which ran for about 11 years. We finally ran out of money. Wrote a lot of music -- some of it finally getting published.
Had open-hear surgery in 1999 -- had a change of heart (G) - left a tenured position at Paine and rebuilt a downtown building to found my fencing school (I'd been teaching throughout, but not competing). Discovered that the elbow had healed, and my 1-year anniversary present of my surgery to myself was taking second place nationally in my age group. Wrote a book on fencing that sells pretty well and is well thought of (you can google Magnum Libre D'Escrime).
Made my way to the Veteran age group national sabre team -- got my butt kicked at my first world championships in France -- came back in 2006 and took the Bronze Medal in the 60+ World Championships in Sabre in Bath, England.
I garden, play in a really good brass quintet, do primitive camping and mountain stream trout fishing, repair and work on string instruments, go to ball games with my girl friend of 16 years, and live with my five rescued dogs. Generally very happy with my life.
Now 2020 - still teaching fencing, still composing. Find me on FB
