Russ's Story

After graduating BHS in 1980 I took classes at PSU but struggled with balancing studies and play time. I soon found myself very broke and in the Army. If there’s one thing the military teaches you, it’s ‘attention to detail.’ And that you’d much rather be in school… In 1985 I returned to Portland and enrolled in engineering classes at PCC. This time around, academics won over partying. While taking a calculus class at the Sylvania Campus, I fell in love with a woman, Katy Wood, that was sleeping in class but beating me on test scores. ul daughter and these days get to play with a terrific grandson about every third weekend. If you happen to recall the Bugeyed Sprite I drove senior year, it was eventually replaced with a 1960 Austin Healey 3000 that Katy and I compete in vintage rallies with. She cranks a Curta calculator and I get to enjoy the drive. In 2019 I reached a milestone with career rally win number 100. This year (2020) my friend, Garth Ankeny, and I won the AlCan Winter Rally in a 1973 Mercury Capri. That event travels north of the Arctic Circle in winter, takes us to Aklavik, NWT on an ice road then finishes in Anchorage, AK. It’s quite an adventure! Life is good!
