Russ's Story
After graduating from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, I spent a year as newspaper editor on board the cruise ship Royal Viking Sky, traveling to more than 30 countries on five continents.
I then worked at newspapers in Carbondale, Fort Lauderdale, Corvallis Ore. and Austin, Texas.
In the early '80s I spent an academic year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on a Vannevar Bush Fellowship.
In 1985 I joined the staff of Business Week magazine, where I worked for ten years: in Detroit, Stamford, Ct., Minneapolis, Washington DC (where I covered the Pentagon and went to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait to cover the first Gulf War) and finally to San Francisco, where I was bureau manager.
In the mid-90s I was managing editor of W...Expand for more
ired magazine before being recruited by US News & World Report as senior technology writer. I had a short ride on the dot-com gravy train at Red Hat software. After that, I became executive editor and then editor in chief of Business 2.0 magazine.
Recently I spent two years as senior writer at the well funded but ultimately doomed Conde Nast Portfolio.
Now I'm working independently, writing for various magazines and websites and ghost writing material for corporate executives.
Recent work-related travels have taken me to China, Brazil, Switzerland (where my profile picture was taken), Mozambique and the United Arab Emirates.
I live in Berkeley, Ca., with my wife and 4-year-old daughter.
