Ruth's Story

Life I am happy where I am with what I have done and who I have become--most of the time, but I am blessed every single day--no matter what. After I graduated from Fresno High, I attended Fresno State College for two years. During the third year, after getting married and moving to Wawona in Yosemite National Park, the commute and first pregnancy put college on hold. I lived in Yosemite Park (where my two oldest children were born) for 7 beauty-filled years. I also worked as a short order cook, post office attendant, grocery store clerk, maid, horse wrangler, and VIP horse patrol ranger. During the stormy winter of 1972-73, we picked up our little family and moved to New Mexico. We worked as ranch hands, I had two more children, and I returned part-time to college. I worked as a lifeguard and a secretary to support classes, eventually graduating with a BA in Elementary Education, Secondary Education, and Special Education with minors in Language Arts and physical education. Immediately after graduation from WNMU, I started teaching special education in Silver City, NM. Three years later, we moved to Albuquerque, where I worked for 22 years with the Albuquerque Public Schools as a Special Education teacher, department chair, rodeo team sponsor, Driver's Ed teacher, and swim coach. In 1985, I finally finished my MA--Special Education and Physical Education. Shortly before my "retirement," I started teaching English at the University of New Mexico where I am about to begin my 7 1/2-th year. My children are grown-up and have lives of their own, but our home still has laughter of children as we are in our 6th year as legal guardians of my stepson's twin sons. I am now involved again in PTC meetings, active in Ag in the Classroom programs, setting up Book Fairs, and helping out with field trips and special events. I am currently the treasurer of the boys' scout troop, also. My husban...Expand for more
d is a retired Colonel in the US Marines, my oldest daughter is a Captain in the USAF, and her husband is a retired USAF U-2 pilot; my next daugther served 6 years in the USArmy and is about to earn her degree from SAC State; my youngest daughter is the manager of a Domino's Pizza Place, and my son is currently serving his second tour in Iraq as a Captain in the Air Force. Our "adopted" son is a Lieutenant in the USAF serving in Germany. My oldest stepson is in the USArmy (served 15 months in Iraq), my stepdaughter is a systems analyst/designer for Trizetto Corp in Denver, and my youngest stepson is an inspector/designer/consultant/trainer with the FAA while his wife is in the USAF (served in Afghanistan). Our "adopted" daughter just retired from Swiss Airlines to stay home with our youngest grandson. I am a member of the Blue Star Moms, a State Representative of the Citizen's Review Board (evaluating and making recommendations on cases of children who are wards of the state before the cases go to court), New Mexico CowBelles (state editor), Quixote Animal Humane Rescue, LadyLobo (UNM) basketball fan club, and the Methodist Church choir. My husband, Mike, and I enjoy time with our children, traveling, taking cruises, family gatherings, getting together with friends, and playing with our grandbabies (we have five grandsons). I enjoy painting, music, horseback riding, scrapbooking, writing, working out at CURVES, cooking, reading, volunteering in the boys' school, and researching our family trees. I am very blessed to have most of my original teeth, most of my eyesight(glasses help), most of my memory bank in tact, and most of my working parts still working (with the assistance of a few vitamins and minerals, of course), so life is good--very good. I don't think I learned everything I needed to know about life while at FHS, but I sure got a great jump start into the real world from there.
