Ruth's Story

I left Kalamazoo in August 1968 and headed for Virginia Beach Virginia where my brother was stationed in the Navy. He returned home in January 69 - I stayed - I had fallen in love with the ocean beaches - and all that comes with it! I worked as an account executive for Ticketron- I covered the major arenas in Virginia. On 2/10/73 I met the love of my life - I just didn't know it at the time. He breezed in from New York corporate offices. It was a Saturday - we had a meeting to go over our project - the first thing he said after hello - was "make us a pot of coffee" I was offended, I was a professional - I thought he specifically asked me because I was the only woman! We were scheduled to work all weekend - even late evenings.....well I receive a call from the apt manager asking if they could let my parents into my apartment! I had no idea they were in the area. We ended up moving our work session to my home. Mom took an immediate dislike to Chet - he was tall - quarter back type from New York - rude - overbearing and afterall he was making her little girl work all night and all weekend while her parents were there visiting! We accomplished our mission for the first phase of computerizing the Virginia state parks reservations. Chet returned to New York - On 2/14/73 I received an anonomous flower delivery for valentines day ---a "funeral arrangement" - complete with stand! I had no idea who was trying to send me a message - nor what the message was... As it turns out Chet had sent me flowers to apologize for working me so hard while my parents were in town - when the florist told him they did not have the flowers he ordered - he told them to just send the biggest and most beautiful arrangement they could. I guess that was their most expensive anyway!(most explensive is not always the best choice!)Later - this would become a private joke between us - I would send him a funeral arrangement on this anniversary. ontinued to work together - I was transferred to New York! By the summer of 1973 I moved to NY. A totally new experience - but that is another story. I ended up with the Nassau Colliseum, Long Island. That move changed my life. After several moves - Chicago - back to NY - Chet asked me to marry him. We lived in Alaska for 10 years - Chet at the Hospital and me with Alascom. Chet died of cancer. I took a transfer to Vancouver WA. Worked as Corporate Security Officer of DOD for another decade. I am widowed and divorced - single for the past decade. I have lived in Washington for 22 years. For the past 14 years I have been self-employed in real estate investment and development. Building custom homes, building out my own investment projects - mini storage facilities/flex bldgs etc. My 86 year old Mother has been with me (in-law apt) since 2002 - we enjoy our friendship, gardening, family and our faith. We have a home at the coast and enjoy long weekends on the beach and in the local antique shops....roaring fires - a good cup of "her" coffee - card and board games. In the winter, we take projects along. Last year we completed 17 quilts. I love life - I am happy - even though my life is more hectic than I would like. I feel much like I did at 30, I have not slowed down. Plan to take more time off in the next couple years - I do not know if I can ever "really" retire. More time at the coast would be great.....more time with my best friend David walking thru the historical Ft. Vancouver Park every morning or riding along the Columbia River on the tandem bike - stopping for a coffee or an ice cream cone. It is funny how I have become my mother - the older I get, the more I appreciate the simple things of life - digging for clams, crabbing, walks on the beach, a beautiful sunset, the sound of the ocean as I sleep, the smell of the ocean air as I awake....and sharing it all with loved ones.
