Sallie's Story
Life
I live in Richmond, VA. After teaching and working in my university's Career Center, I became a Guidance Counselor. For over 15 years I've worked in Alternative Ed.--with kids who haven't been successful in "regular" schools, for a variety of reasons. I REALLY get into my work. I even delivered a former student's baby several years ago (the ambulance hadn't made it yet)! Actually, that young lady & her 2 kids are the closest thing I have to being "my kids", as I don't have any biological kids. (I do have a super dog, though!) My 2 tries at marriage have not been successful. The "Duby Sisters" both live in Richmond but we don't sing much anymore. I feel that God has richly blessed me in this life and I'm ready for another 50+ years!
School
After finishing at Kenmore Junior High School in Arlington, VA, I moved to Springfield, VA. I attended West Springfield High School and graduated in 1970.
College
All through high school, I had planned to major in Music Education and to become a Choral Teacher. I also had dated one boy all through high school and since he was a year behind me, I wanted to stay in Northern VA. Therefore, for my first year of college, I accepted a vocal music scholarship to a tiny college called Luther Rice College--right off of Franconia Rd. I majored in Music Education at first. Then, I decided I like to sing but I am not all that much into the other musical things music majo...Expand for more
rs have to study. I thought I still wanted to teach so I changed to Elementary Education. The next year, I went to Virginia Commonwealth University (even though my credits didn't transfer.) I finished my undergrad. work in December 1974 and received my BS in Elementary Ed.
I returned to VCU in the 80's and earned my Master's in Counselor Education.
Workplace
The first place to offer me a teaching job in 1975 was Bath County, VA. Culture shock to go from Northern VA, to Richmond, VA and then end up in the rural mountains of western VA. I taught Elementary School for 4.5 yrs. and then determined that I was NOT cut out to be a classroom teacher. After some months of unemployment and then clerical work, I more or less stumbled into volunteer work--in shelters for victims of domestic violence. That convinced me to return to school to get a master's degree in Counselor Education. I worked in my college's Career Planning & Placement office while I attended grad. classes part time. Since graduating in 1986, I have worked for Richmond (VA) Public Schools as a Counselor. Currently, I work with inner-city kids in an alternative secondary program, to help them get a GED. LOVE IT! I have also worked in a neat variety of other volunteer and part-time jobs over the years. I am very blessed!
If I won $100 million, I'd give much of it to charities that help people, then spend the rest on family , friends and ME!.
