Sallie's Story

I hope my friends from Yuba will remember me as a smart, friendly, warm, and open minded person who was always interested in others and was willing to stand up for the rights of all. (If you knew me very well you might remember that I was learning disabled in the area of spelling. Thank God for spell check! lol) Because of growing up with my Uncle Beck, who was handicapped, I decided to devote my life to fighting for the educational rights of all children, reguardless of their handicapping conditions. I have worked with deaf, blind, physically handicapped, emotionally disturbed, severe and profoundly handicapped, learning disabled, mentally retarted, you get the idea. I am now working as the Director of Special Education in my district. My dad told me that I should be a lawyer because, "You would argue with a god d**** fencepost!" Well, I'm not a lawyer but you can bet that I do lots of arguing to ensure that my students receive everything they are entitled to. I have never lived in any state other than Oklahoma and Texas. I did have an antique quilt business for about 15 years which I did on a part time basis. I had a partner who lived in Manhattan and she bought quilts back east. I bought them in the south and then we would combine our inventory to do 5 shows each year. We did shows in Houston, Nashville, San Francisco, Manhatton, and we would choose a different location for the 5th show in some New England state. It was soooo much fun and yes, I LOVE New York! I got to meet a lot of interesting people. Speaking of interesting people, I don't know if any of you saw me or not but in 1989 I was on Wheel of Fortune. Vanna is a down-to-earth sweetheart of a gal and Pat is a total JERK! Just so you know. It was a hoot. My husband and I went to a mall in OKC for the contestant search and there were 10,000 people standing in line. I'm not kidding! I told him, "Let's go shopping." He said, "No, we came here to get you on...Expand for more
this show and that's what we're going to do." I said, "Take a look around. What do you think the chances are?" At which point he said to me that I was the queen of bullsh** and if anyone could talk their way onto it I could. Well, the producers of the show chose 24 people out of the 10,000 and since I was one of them I guess that proves that I am indeed, the queen of b.s. I am twice divorced and have two sons and a daughter. Oddly enough, Micah has blond hair, Samuel has red hair, and Morgan has dark brown hair. Go figure. I am blessed. They are all great kids. Really decent human beings. What more can you ask for? My mom is still at Yuba, 82 years old and still playing the piano every time the church doors are open. My dad died in 1982 and I miss him every day. One of the saddest days of my life occured in August of 2006 when the only "sister" I ever had was killed in a tragic car accident. Nancy "Pea" Green Cheshire was 50 years old at the time of her passing. I still can't believe she is gone. For those of you with siblings I would say to you not to take them for granted. It is lonely and often it is difficult for those of us who have none. OK, enough whinning. Change of subject... I am trying to find Jeanene Patton. If anyone knows how to contact her, please let me know. There are a lot of Yuba people that I would love to reconnect with. Overall, I am pretty much the same person that I was ALL those years ago. I am as happy as I make up my mind to be. I love to read and travel and learn new things. I believe in and expect the best from people. (I've been disappointed many times but I still keep on believing.) You know, "That hope that springs eternal in the human breast." I may write more at a later date but I have to get back to work now. I would love to hear from any of you old "Roadrunners!" If any of you are interested in a reunion, contact me and let's getting something lined up. Bye for now.
