Sally's Story
Life
After graduation from Wilson I went on to Earlham College, from which I graduated with an English major in 1962. I taught for two years in Elyria, Ohio, then married and moved to the Pittsburgh area. I taught one additional year in Fox Chapel, PA, before retiring to stay home and raise children.... I married Warren Porter in 1964; we were divorced in 1986. We have three children: Adam, who is a religion professor at Illinois College in Jacksonville, IL, Laura, who is an ESOL teacher in Amherst, MA, and Lydia, who is a management analyst in San Jose, CA. Adam has two boys, aged 9 and 7; Laura has a litle boy who just turned two; Lydia has a little girl who will be two on Christmas....I have lived in Maryland since 1970 and worked as an English teacher and reading specialist at Blair High School until June, 2004, when I joyfully retired. I've traveled extensively, own a comfortable home, have wonderful kids and friends. Life is good!
School
After Wilson, I went to Earlham College, in Richmond, Indiana, where I majored in English and metamorphized into a decent student, and, of all things, an English teacher! I taught for two years in Elyria, Ohio, before marrying Warren Porter, Earlham '61, and moving to the Pittsburgh area. I taught another year and then retired to have children. Adam is 36 and a religion prof at Illinois College in Jacksonvil...Expand for more
le, Illinois, with two boys, Jonah and Isaiah ; Laura is 34, an ESOL teacher, presently at home enjoying her first born, Yano; Lydia, 34, a management analyst, lives in San Jose with husband Gordon Douglass, with her new born, Sabrina. I moved to the DC area and lived in Kensington from 1971 until 1986, when we divorced. I went back to school and received both master and doctoral degrees in secondary reading instruction. I live now in Silver Spring, near Four Corners and near Blair High School, where I taught for twenty years, beefore retiring last June. I summer at Nantucket where my prescient father build a home for kids and grandkids to gather in back in the early 70's. I'm still a big reader, and love to walk and swim. I value my friends enormously and am grateful for good health, wonderful children and a living wage. I've traveled extensively, but not enough! Life has been good to me.
College
I graduated from Earlham college in 1962 with a degree in English and a minor in secondary education. In 1972 I enrolled in the school of education at the University of Maryland; in 1985 I received my M.Ed. degree which enabled me to seek employment as a reading specialist with the Montgomery County Public School system. I returned to the University of Maryland a few years later to work on my doctoral degree in reading, which I received in December of 1983,
