Sam's Story

This site seems better, one unread inbox message I have no clue where it is or who sent it. My story? It has been a great ride. I've been to places nobody else will ever be. Started working at NASSCO as an Outside Machinist for a few years until the lay offs reached me. The one ship I loved so much working on is called USNS Zeus. Perfect name for her (Shhh). One of the first of two machinists with my lead man on her flat keel, and one of the last off of her before sea trials when I asked for a transfer off of it. I shot those twin shafts with my best partner ever down there, Nancy (the one pretending to be Minnie Mouse in my pictures). We aligned just about every coupling she (Zeus) had in her, with other Apprentices and new hires under my wing. The side thruster alignments became my class room to teach others with. I thunk I was a lifer there until the lay offs hit me. I moved onto Telecommunications work and never looked back at the shipyard. I lost a cousin and several friends to the dangers down there at that shipyard. I was injured badly a couple of times, and it wasn't my fault. t place. As a telecomm tech, I helped to set up several new telephone switches and all that goes with a complete rewiring of every location on a university campus,,, on several campuses across the southwest. I was also apart of NBC's upgrade to Stereo Broadcasting back in the day here in Sorrento Valley at SAIC. They wanted me to go to Chicago to help finish the set up where NBC lived, but I wasn't leaving my home town any more (too many orphaned pets to take care of here) and left that outfit fast for another location in town. I told them do not send me to Chicago, and when they handed me the plane ticket to Chicago I moved on. I had that luxury of picking my work in that period. The network of the retired (they took the early out plan) Ma Bell guys I earned respect from was my ticket to any where with just a few telephone calls. I've had other IC work not telephone connected. I am not married and never have been. The cutie sitting next to me in my profile picture is the best part of this guys life. We have been together since the early 1990's. The picture was taken in Pine Valleys park about 1998. Lots of fun was my goal and I find it often.
