Samuel's Story
I would never have thought forty (40) years ago that this time would move so fast. I can still remember my first 2 a days. If you never knew Coach Bob Gauldin, or Chick Stessman...those last words would have no meaning to you. We Had Billy Markham, Calvin Shelby, Big Bob Evans, Ray Nichols, Roy Whalen, and a host of other Pirate Varsity Stars to emulate. My lot though was cast with other freshmen, Mercer Ferguson, Trent Wesley, Nick Williams, Larry Hayden, Charlie Green, Carl Mcullough, Byron Grimmet, Charlie Robinson, The Mudurous Twins, Bob Jones, Mike (Bubbles) Graunwald, David Whalen, Little did I know then that I would one day cherish those days. fter I left Paseo. There were many days that I was very grateful for those two especially,Nick, and Big Bob, were for real "Tough"...they would physically punish you on the field. If you were a little guy like I was then...they thought it their job to make you a Paseo Football Pirate, read, extra punishment...and worthy to one day become a member of the Varsity "Boogalo Squad"...as coined by Otis Howard...another Pirate "Madman".Ironically...two years after High School I found myself needing all the mettle that Paseo Football, and the Pirate characters that I played with could muster. Mine is a guy story, I believe that because of my Dad, my friends, Lee Malroy, Samuel "Tricky Sam" Hall, Zanders Jihad Kelly, Maurice Jackson, Raymond "Hat" Mosely with a host of other guys and more... that my journey has been truly a man thing.
