Samuel's Story

New update here. It is March 12, 2008 and this Sunday is selection Sunday for the NCAA March Madness Tournament. Like a lot of places, at work we fill out our brackets and have a competition with a first place trophy and the winner gets to keep that trophy for a year. It's kind of cool in a cheesey sort of way. It's about 18 inches high and comes complete with the year and the winners name on it. Yes, my name is on that trophy but it has been a few years and I really want to become the first two time winner in our school. If anyone wants to talk about the brackets before the tournament starts next Thursday call me at 206-436-9210. Sam Life I have ten minutes so let's do this. I've been living in the Seattle area for most of my adult life since college. I am married and I have two boys (one of whom is married and the other is a senior in high school). I currently teach Washington State History and World Geography at King's High School. (That's right, every freshman has to pass my class in order to graduate and yes I remind them of that fact!) Actually, we have a lot of fun in my class because there is nothing worse than having to sit in a boring history class. Among other things they know I am from Twisp and the kids like me to tell stories about the place. (Anybody out there remember sitting in Mr. Lewis' science class in the 8th grade when the juniors made the poor typing teacher so mad that she chased them into the hall with a table leg? I do and it's a great story to break up a lecture with.) ...Expand for more
I also have coached football for the past 25 years or so. I have been both an assistant coach and a head coach. Currently, I am on the high school staff here at King's with the title of "Director of Football Operations". That's a fancy title for an administrative position where I do everything from coordinate practice drills and keep the coaches from tripping over each other on the practice field to handling the press releases and game recaps after the games on Friday nights. It's actually a lot of fun because I get to see my son play every day. He is about two inches taller than me and bench presses 250 lbs. No, I don't wrestle with him any more. I don't mess with my other son either...he's 6'3". The kid looks like my dad only taller. The other thing that I do around school is that I announce the basketball games for both the boys and girls teams and have done so for the past 15 years. I am the voice of the Knights and the Lady Knights. On a personal note I am still a Christian. My wife Dianna and I attend a small church in Mill Creek that meets every Sunday at space that we rent from Arch Bishop Murphy High School. That's kind of an interesting place to go to church for me considering that we meet in the student center there and Arch Bishop Murphy and King's are league rivals. Oh well. The one thing that I really don't do much of any more is play my guitar. Like all of us, there's just too much to do and, once you lose your calluses it hurts to try to get them back. Oops. I'm late. Gotta go.
