Sandra's Story
Born in Schenectady, New York. Came to California when I was 12, attended Hamilton Jr. High School and graduated from Fremont High School, Oakland, in 1957.
My first job after high school was a federal job .. age discrimination existed and government jobs were the only ones not discriminating due to age. I was married in August, 1957 to Dave Badley (class of 1954, Fremont HS) and shortly thereafter, began work for San Francisco Ordnance District at 1515 Clay Street in Oakland. I worked until the end of September, 1958, when my son, Mark, was born October 8, 1958. I was a stay at home Mom for 5 months and then went job hunting again, this time landing a secretarial/personnel job with Kaiser Permanente at its administrative offices on 42nd Street in Oakland. I continued there until September, 1963, when Mark entered kindergarten.
My daughter, Kathy, was born in 1965 and my son, David, in 1967. I worked off and on for Western Girl, a temporary employment agency from 1963 to March, 1969, when I returned to work at Kaiser-Permanente, in Hayward. I was only going to work part time for a few months and that turned into a 36-year career. During my time at Kaiser, I worked as a Personnel Assistant and in Medical Center Administration and in 1976, I had an opportunity to learn and teach the first automated appointment system developed by Kaiser's IT Department. That system was implemented in Pediatrics in July, 1977. There was a lull during that time while Kaiser decided whether the pilot was successful and whether they should implement it in Northern California and I went back to my Personnel Assistant's job (lucky me there was an opening). Then, in 1981, the o...Expand for more
rganization decided to implement the Patient Appointment System in Northern California and I was offered a position in its IT Department. From 1981 to 1991, I spent my time implementing, teaching and supporting PARRS in facilities throughout Northern California and in Georgia. In 1991, I moved from a staff position to a management position as Manager of the Applications Consultants group .. by that time there were 46 people working on a multitude of applications developed or bought off the shelf by Kaiser. This group was responsible for implementation, training and support of numerous automated applications.
I retired from Kaiser-Permanente in October, 1999, went back to school and passed the California Realtor exam in 2001 and practiced real estate with an independent Realtor for 8 years before a second retirement in 2009.
While I was working, I also started an educational program, first attending Chabot College when I lived in San Lorenzo, and then to Diablo Valley College, after moving to Pleasant Hill. I graduated with an AA degree in 1991.
Then I transferred to Cal State, East Bay, and graduated with a Liberal Arts Degree with an option in Business Administration in 1999.
I was divorced in 1974 and in 1976 I met a wonderful guy, Fred Pellegrin. We lived together for 30 years and were married in 2006. Fred passed away on Mother's Day, 2013 and I will always have a special place in my heart for him.
I've been blessed with 3 great kids, and in turn, have 4 granddaughters, a bonus granddaughter and a bonus grandson, and in turn, have 4 great grandchildren. And I still have Fred's kids and their families in my life.
And so, a new chapter begins ..
