Sandra's Story

Added note, June 13, 2010: My dear Art crossed the finish line for the last time on May 10, 2010. He was one of the bravest people I have ever known. He was diagnosed with cancer on December 29, 2010. He fought it with all that he had--while maintaining an incredibly positive attitude. Sandee As with everyone, a lot of water has gone over the dam with me as well. Tho my first marriage was a disaster, I survived it. I left the country and worked in the hotel/restaurant field in management (in a man's world) with a specialty in food and beverage and enjoyed a successful career. My present husband, who was a family friend, looked me up and we renewed acquaintances, to the point that he proposed. I took a year off to come back to the States to see if we had something or not. 43 years later, we are still together. Unfortunately, his illness has terribly spoiled our happiness, but we know we still have each other, no matter what. When I returned to the States, I went to work for Lawton and Co. Jewelers, and began an apprenticeship on my own time with the goldsmith and jewelry designer there, as well as learning the art of engraving. I became the manager, designer/jeweler/colored stone specialist for a local jewelry shop and worked in the business for 17 years. During that time, I met a lot of young couples from the Space Center who were getting engaged, had no family here and needed help with arrangements. And...food. Catering was not in vogue in the area yet, so I was able to prepare their food since large batch cooking was very familiar to me. Eventually, after recovering from a serious illness, I decided that I wanted to go back into business again and opened a full service party business which we still own today. "Jus' Clownin' Around" is our company name and I can see a few eye-rolls at that, from those who knew me from school days. We specialize in large event custom and thematic decorating, conferences, conventions, etc. and I'm a licensed event planner and coordinator. A few years after we opened our business, I decided it was time to bring the food component in--by then I had been cooking for folks and their events for years--I read about personal chefs on the west coast and decided that Brevard needed it's first real personal chef--me! That part of the business is called "The Personal Chef"(what else!) and I have been cooking for the greatest custo...Expand for more
mers in the world for 23 years! My husband Art (who is a former jockey) is also my partner, and is one of my sous chefs and is also bar manager. For obvious reasons, we aren't taking any business for the foreseeable future. He is the man with many stories and what an exciting life he has led. He has gone from launching horses to launching missiles and was in the defense missile business for forty years before retirement--then I put him to work! I have two children from my first marriage, our daughter was our partner in our party/ gift shop and an excellent designer and sous chef herself. She works for us part time as a cake decorator. Her son, our grandson, will be 24. Over all of these years, Art and I have been blessed with a wide circle of friends, family and classmates, and my heart is still with CHS. Once a Tiger, always a Tiger. My mother was a Tiger, my children were Tigers, and strangely, our grandson went to our old alma mater in Rockledge, also... but as a Raider!! It sure was hard to say "Go Raiders" at his football games! Sadly, although I was the Chairman of our recent class's 50th reunion, Art's illness caused me to have to step back towards the end of planning. And, then he was in the hospital unexpectedly that weekend, but we had such a wonderful Tiger Team Committee, and so much planning had already been done, that with the help of my dear friend, Ginger Fine (1961), who stepped in for me, earlier and all of the other volunteers, including friend Gloria Foose from out of town--AND my daughter, Tami who jumped in on the day of, all went flawlessly. Life has been good to Art and I, we've had the bumps that most folks have, health issues, etc., but we've also had the good things. We've traveled extensively, done so many wonderful things together, seen sights, camped, fished, raised butterflies, read a thousand books at least, between us, and just enjoyed our lives together. We have loved working together and our partnership has been an excellent one. Along the way, we have been enriched by our many friends in all walks of life, who we value to this day--some we don't see for years, but their friendship is just as valued as ever. Even with all of our difficulties, I realize every day how fortunate Art and I are to have the support and caring that we have been shown. It is times like this that make us the most thankful. Sandee Go, Tigers!
