Sandra's Story
Twenty years ago, I wasn't sure what I really wanted to do, so I left for boot camp a month after graduation. After 9 years of turning wrenches and fixing engines, I attended the University of North Florida. Now, I am a commissioned officer in the United States Navy. I completed a three year tour on USS HALYBURTON (FFG 40) in Mayport, FL. I was the first female to report on board and deploy on this ship. It was truely an experience. p Department Head School, I checked onboard USS FARRAGUT (DDG 99) as the Operations Officer. After an 18 month tour, I am getting ready to head to COMPHIBRON 8 in Norfolk, VA. Here, I will be embarked on USS IWO JIMA (LPD 7) and will complete a deployment with her as the Staff Future Operations Officer. I've been married for 16 years to Joe and we have two girls, Daniella and Olivia. The Navy has been very good to us...financial stability, education, travel and the ability to buy what we want. Not a bad deal, plus a retirement check in the end. Best decision I made!
