Sandra's Story
I was married immediately after graduation from Miami Valley Hospital School of Nursing and we will celebrate our 50th Anniversary in 2010. I have since had two children, two grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. My first jobs were at Dayton Children¿s Psychiatric Hospital, then Dayton State Hospital, and then the MVH School of Nursing as a Clinical Instructor, and as a MVH Night Supervisor. During that time I attended classes at the University of Dayton.
After a brief period at Fostoria City Hospital in Fostoria, Ohio, we moved back to Dayton and I worked evenings in the Recovery Room at MVH and had a brief stint as Evening Supervisor. I began working at The Children¿s Medical Center (formerly Barney¿s Convalescent Hospital, now Dayton Children¿s) in February, 1967, one month after it opened as an acute care hospital. I worked part-time evenings, then full-time days in the ER for about nine years. I was the only nurse on duty for many years until the census grew to where another nurse was needed.
My next position was as Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinician, a first for Dayton. One of my responsibilities was establishing the Hemophilia Treatment Center. We saw adults as well as children using a comprehensive care model with case management. That also was a first for Dayton (1975). I taught individuals or family members to administer clotting factor intravenously at home. I also worked with children with cancer and their families. Through the years my responsibilities changed over and over again. I was also Data Manager for what is now called The Children¿s Oncology Group, a national group sponsoring clinical trials. I was the only nurse in the hospital administering intravenous chemotherapy until I was able to develop an ongoing course to teach other nurses about pediatric cancer and chemotherapy. I made home visits for hospice care until the Hospice of Dayton o...Expand for more
pened and decided to include children. It was one of the most rewarding things I ever did. All during this time, I attended classes at several universities until I finally had enough credits for a bachelor¿s degree. I became a Certified Pediatric Oncology Nurse when the first national test was offered.
Then out-of-the-blue I was called by the director of the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in Oncology Program at The Children¿s Hospital of Philadelphia and was told that I was recommended for the program and that I would receive a stipend for use as needed. After a week long orientation in Philadelphia I commuted two days a week for one semester. The second semester I did a practicum in a Dayton pediatrician¿s office and only commuted at the end for the final exam. The program awarded a Certificate as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in Oncology. It was a wonderful experience and I met a lot of really terrific classmates, instructors and others at their Cancer Center. I took the test and was Certified as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner by the Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners
The last 6 years I worked, I had very little patient contact and thought I would miss it terribly. I was surprised to find that although I missed many individual patients, I was really quite burnt out and needed the change. I spent my time as a medical writer, collaborating with the IRB, coordinating studies, and writing as well as administering grants. All through the years I was involved in many community projects and organizations concerning Cancer and Hemophilia.
I learned so many things and my opportunities were so varied. If I had it to do over again I would change very little. My education at MVH School of Nursing was the foundation for everything I was able to do. I¿ve always felt blessed for my experiences there. That foundation gave me a wonderful 38 year career as a registered nurse.
