Sandra's Story

Life I married a Navy man from Cincinnati, OH in 1960. We moved from Conn. in 1961 to four years of recruiting duty in Indianapolis, IN. From there we were transferred to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in 1965. In 1967 we moved to San Diego, California. Then in 1970 we moved back to Cincinnati, Ohio and my husband Jerry finished up his Navy career at Miami University in the NROTC in Oxford, Ohio for 5 years. He retired from the Navy in 1975 and we stayed in Cincinnati til 1990 and then moved more or less a suburb of Cincinnati called Hidden Valley Lake. We live in a Condo on the golf course. We have 5 children, 4 girls and 1 son. We now have 20 granchildren. Jerry was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 1982 after several doctors, etc. We can look back now and see through pictures that he's had it at least 32 years. Through the good doctors at the University of Cincinnati he has kept moving through all of this. He had a Pallidotomy in 1997 when his medicine was no longer working for him. This is brain surgery that took 5 hours while he was awake. It was very successful and took care of his movements on the left side. He still has Parkinson's. Through all of this we started our own Non Profit organization called Parkinsinson's Disease Support Network, OKI. The OKI stands for Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. We mainly wanted to keep funds to help people here in the Cincinnati area and for Parkinson's Research at the University of Cincinnati. We raise funds through donations, a Golf Outing called the Jerry Wuest Golf Classic which we have done for 16 years. I've facilitated 2 support groups over the years, I only have one now which is at Dearborn County Hospital here in Southeastern India...Expand for more
na. Our organization has three exercise groups weekly that are free to patients, caregivers and friends. We exercise for a half hour in chairs specific exercises geared to the PD patient. Then we play chair volleyball with a beach ball, and after that a whole group goes out to eat dinner. It is great for the social aspect for the patients and caregivers. Our Non Profit organization pays for the therapists who lead each group. We have given over $200,000 to the University for PD research over the last 10 to 15 years. We cleared $36,000 at our golf outing in December and will give that to them next April for Parkinson's awareness month. We have gone to Washington, DC two years, but have sent others to represent our organization for the last 11 years. The two years we went, we met Michael J. Fox and enjoyed talking with him. He and Jerry are the same size in height so he told Jerry "Parkinson's can't kill us, we are like roaches and we just keep going." Our organization is an all volunteer organization so we have now salaries, etc. Truly great friends have helped us over the years and if it wasn't for them I don't know what we would have done. We hold a Derby Party in the Spring the golf outing was Sept. and friends of ours had a Block Party , it was the 10th year for that and they raised $3,500 clear for that. We personally attend two of the groups every week. One is here in Lawrenceburg on Monday and the other is Thursdays on the West side of Cincinnati. We also attend Xavier University Basketball games and really enjoy watching college sports. I could go on and on, but I'll bring this to a halt and hope to hear from some of my old classmates. Thank you, Sandy Kilpatrick Wuest
