Sandra's Story

Life Born and raised in DuBois, I now own the house on Third Street where I lived for eighteen years with just my parents and a number of pets. One of my best galpals was Jackie Aaron who married Gary Mitchell (from Central Catholic.) I still regularly see her, Kris Beighey (married Terry Swope), Emmy Mikelonis (married Dick Scott from St. Marys), Denise Lepionka ( married Don McMillen), and Susie Krach (married John Lee). Occasionally, our "yah-yah" group is enlargened by visits from Pamm Chaney (Southport,NC). After graduating from DHS, I left DuBois for Elmira, NY. I attended a private girls college and received both undergraduate and graduate degrees in English/Elementary Education. I am still certified to teach K-12 in both New York State and Pennsylvania. After one year of teaching English to eighth and tenth graders that severely tried my patience, aspirations, and wallet,I resigned, worked as a "sub" teacher for three years, and returned to DuBois in an attempt to escape my problems and renew my high school romance with Mike Collins. While I was a "sub" in Sayre, PA, I discovered that the Principal was the one and only Mr. Clinton Stewart, or "Herr Klink" as we called him at DHS. Age had mellowed both of us, LOL! The return to DuBois was short-lived and quite unsuccessful. In 1979, I moved, with my then-current "beau" to Las Vegas. Vegas worked for me, but not for my friend. I stayed, and found a job with the Las Vegas Fire and Rescue in 1982; John returned to McKees Rocks, PA, where he resided in his family's home with his younger brother. (John died in 2002). Currently, I am retired from thirty years at Las Vegas Fire and Rescue. In my career there, I was an emergency dispatcher, training officer, and health/safety inspector. Having worked all of my life, I find myself struggling with the many empty days, but expect that I will take steps to rectify this in the Fall of 2009. Also, I now find myself unexpectedly single, so I am really going through a lot of "life changes." I hope that all of you are re...Expand for more
asonably well, and happy. Remember my motto,"Live, Laugh, and Love." My parents were both examples of that motto, and I think that they had good lives. I wish the same, for all of you. Sandy Kirkwood I always wanted to be a school teacher when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. I still lose myself in books, finishing one in two days! Update October 2013: While I remain "single", I have taken on a number of volunteer activites. Tuesdays, I spend four hours in a police shirt in the the baggage claim area of the local Airport. It is really fun answering questions for the tourists, I receive immediate satisfaction from being helpful. Wednesdays, I again don my "cop shirt" to work at the police training center, inputting test scores into their computers. Thursdays, I drive the twenty miles to Henderson NV to volunteer for another police department inputting F.I. card information into local, state and federal databases. Fridays, I put on a red shirt with a cross in the front to deliver blood supplies for the local Red Cross chapter. Saturdays and Sundays, I am "at large", terrorizing the world, devouring copious amounts of wine, food, and friendship! Update 2018: Our fiftieth Reunion will be held August 10, 2019 at Luigi's Villa ( the former Litts Club) in DuBois, PA. Please plan to attend; this is a milestone in our lives as former classmates. Update, January 2022. My yah-yahs group is shrinking: both Pamm Chaney and Kris Beighey Swope are now deceased. I still volunteer for both Las Vegas and Henderson Police Departments, but only two days weekly. I have developed a severe IBS problem, so I now have a chronic health condition that makes life rather unbearable. For entertainment, I fly monthly to DuBois, shop at Susie's in Hyde, visit with a few friends and return back from Pennsylvania to Las Vegas. Still without a relationship, much to my dismay. I eat out for meals, which affords me some socialization. Life has not turned out to meet my expectations!!!!

Here I am, arrived at age 71. Such joy to have been remembered by so many, and not forgotten. With age comes wisdom, and I can't wait!!!
