Sandra's Story
Life
I have two adult children, born in upstate NY while my husband, Jerry, was completing his degrees. Greg is in his mid-40s and Melanie is in her early 40s. Greg is unmarried. Melanie has two sons, Nate and Jonah.
After Jerry got his PhD, we moved to State College, PA where Jerry accepted a job as an Asst. Professor in the electrical engineering department at Penn State University.
I got two degrees from Penn State (as an adult). Actually, I went to college along with my two children!
Jerry and I moved to Tampa, Florida in 1984. He accepted a teaching opportunity (electrical engineering) at the University of South Florida which, oddly enough, is in Tampa.
I worked at the Florida Mental Health Institute (a research facility at USF) for 8 yrs, as an administrator.
We bought a house about 5 miles from campus.
In 1992, I started a niche-market recruiting firm (Gerard-Phillips & Associates). We placed graphic designers, web designers/developers, engineers, technical writers, marketing applicants,etc.,etc. We were unique and very successful until all hell broke loose - 9/11 and the recession. No one hired after that and we had to close our doors. It was sad since the year before had been a banner year for th...Expand for more
e company.
In 1999, My husband took ill and retired from teaching. I decided it was best for me to seek part-time work and/or volunteer work. So,I accepted contract work as an HR consultant, helping start ups. I also served as a volunteer for an adult literacy group.
Three years ago, my husband's illness necessitated placing him in an assisted living facility (the hardest decision I have ever had to make). Since then, I've helped a start-up online college get off the ground and credentialed. Most recently,I've been working at the University's Alzheimer Center doing memory screening, organizing a support group for family caregivers and working on various and sundry projects.
I'm blessed by being surrounded by my family. My two children, grandchildren, my sisters and some cousins all moved to Tampa after we did. And I have a group of friends who are all mutually support.
I have a cat named Tony; I've had a number of 4-legged family members over the years. Each one was special in his/her own way. Tony is 9 - very gentle, friendly and mellow -- a good companion.
I've managed to keep my figure and,for the most part, my health is good.
Would love to hear your story from any of you who remember me!
Cordially,
Sandy
