Sandra's Story

Life I have two children, billy 25 and zack 20 whose married and has a 2 yr old boy. I used to do computer work and bartending for many years until I started working for the army corps of engineers going to devasted areas after disasters. Had the most rewarding time doing work in New Orleans with Katrina, and working on hurricanes, jean, frances and Wilma. Learned I was sick when I was in New Orleans with Portal Vein Thrombosis. Now retired, looking to spend time that I have left with my family. I lived on the east coast of florida for 28 years starting in Ft. Lauderdale and ending up in Palm Beach Gardens. After diagnosed with this illness, my husband and I moved to the west coast to be closer to my mother, sister and brother who all live around the Ft. Myers area. My sons and family have moved in with us to spend all the time they can with me. We rent a nice house with a pool and fish out back on the gulf canal. My brother is a boat dealer so we have unlimited access to all kinds of fishing and yachts to cruise in. In my spare time, I grow veggies, herbs and flowers and spend alot of time on the computer and tanning. I like to throw pool parties and in Florida, frozen drinks are a must, so the bartender background comes in handy. My son Zack is a painter and my son Billy is a Chef at an exclusive island called Cabbage Key. My husband is in the custom home builder business. I am looking to hook up with old friends to write to. The question I have to all of you that read this is how you can spend your life in the cold. Florida is wonderful, sunny and bright. I haven't seen snow in 30 years except on tv. I am an avid reality show watcher, and have dvr's to tape them all. I hope all who read this will write back, Since I have not been home in a while, I forget alot of names, if you write, please remind me where I know you from. Hope you all had a great life. I always wanted to be a marine biologist when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were rignt but i didn't follow it through. Had to move to the beach in flordia and start working instead of going to college. Wanted to be independent. Wish I could do it all over.. go fishing or take a xanax and go to a tanning salon and just chill. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have coffee, gum, and more coffee to be able to deal with the day-to-day. dont have a hero. I think anyone who has had to struggle in life and made it to the other side are heroes. To be be truly happy, I would love to be living on the i...Expand for more
slands of the carribean or hawaii without having to worry about money at all, just enjoying my family and friends. My first crush was Louis Ballentine but that was puppy love. Then in high school it was Eddie collelo who I thought I'd marry, but he cheated with everybody, so i was a young fool. He doesn't have the nickname fasteddie for nothing. I still have feelings in my heart for him. Yes, I'm stylish when I got out. But in Fla, theres no need for that. When it's warm, through on a bathing suit, flops and shorts and your good to go anywhere. One of my weirdest jobs was working in Katrina clean up. I had six trucks that worked for me, and I had to make sure they picked up the full regrigerators that people left behind when they fled the storm or stayed and all the food is nasty smelling. We had to tape it shut to stop the threat of disease and make sure the hazmat team cleaned them and then took them to a gigantic junk yard. Interesting job but there was so much to do there helping people. Imagine being away from your home for three months and returning to your home and you had no electric for that time so all the food in your fridge smelled like a dead body. which reminds me, that was another weird job. Searching for and finding bodies in areas that were devasted in the beginning of the cleaning effort was hard to deal with mentally and for the families waiting for word about their loved ones.If i got one do over, I would go to college and do what I had wanted to do. I share my home with my sons, grandson and any of my friends that need a place for a while, which I find wonderful. I got an award from a three star general for duty in the field of the Katrina cleanup when I got sick. i was really sick with my disease that i didn't know i had and still managed to get my crews to work and their work done for weeks before I had to go to the er. Thats probably my most rewarding one ever. In 10 years, I hope to be alive. I'm going to get there by good diet, staying on meds and lots of xanax.. My first job was at a deli, where I got paid 5.00 to do catering work.. What I remember most about it is the shitty pay and how many ways they wanted you to make coleslaw look good. lol. One memory I'll never forget was on the 4th of july. My friendsk alice bogsch, my sister, maryann and donna marchesani and cindy ferguson put together a float for the fourth parade..we had george washington, two gaurds to accompany the float and cindy and i wore a horse costume to pull it. We were only 10 but that was fun and we won 3rd prize.
