Sandra's Story

I am probably the most out of touch but the most eager to be in touch of the class of 62. I moved to the Philippines in l968 after I married a Filipino who I met at the University of Michigan while studying there. We had a good life together here in Manila. I put up my own pre-school with a partner and enjoyed my teaching years. We had four children, one girl and three boys. My husband passed away in 2003,at the time he was about to become the Senate President here. My daughter ran and won a seat in the Senate in 2004, and my eldest son ran in 2007 and won also so I have two children in the Senate (our Senate has 24 seats). One of my other son, is in the toy business and it's lots of fun. My youngest son is a movie and tv director...but back to me. I write children's books which I give away to the poor.... Since my husband passed away I am pretty much on my own, enjoying doing whatever I like to do but then...my mom had an accident and I brought her here to the Philippines. That's a long story though, so for now..this is my story. I would love to get my hands on our yearbook and post all the then pictures and I would also l ike to get more of our classmates here. I hardly recognize the few names on our list. Hope to see more pictures, the then ones so I can place all of you. I think I am a much different person than I was in High School. I have become more confident and relaxed. I enjoy life and savor friendships. I do recall the few classmates I sat next to in classes and really like to find out what they have been up to. Living in a third world country makes one see life differently and simply put...to count ones blessings. STORY WIZARD 23 I share my home with my two sons, my mom, my two cooks, my gardener, my two drivers, my guard, my washer lady my two cleaning girls and my mom's caregiver, which I find a lot work, a lot of fun and countless challenges. STORY WIZARD 17 My current age is 64. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be really, really, really old. I was so completely mistaken. STORY WIZARD 30 From the story wizard to the right...it says share a childhhood memory you will never forget... Oh, for me I have 104 childhood memories in my SANDY BOOKS that I write, plus 7 BIG BOOKS. To recap one, FRANKIE, THE BULLY, It all started in Kindergarten. I was always a "good" girl. When the teacher said stop playing, I stopped playing. In our Kindergarten classroom we had a huge slide. The rule was that you never go down the slide until the one before you has gotten off the slide at the bottom. Well, Frankie, the "bad" boy in the class was ahead of me and when the teacher said it was time to STOP playing, he wouldn't get off the bottom of the slide so I couldn't go down. I was mortified because the teacher kept saying STOP playing and I couldn't. I think he sat there during the whole story telling that day so that means I also stayed at the top of the slide..... EVERY WOMAN'S NIGHTMARE Since my husband passed away very unexpectedly in 2003, I have made a point of having a yearly check-up so I would not be surprised one day with a sudden illness (though of course, there are many that could surprise us). Wow! A long sentence! Each simple test as we get older leads to a follow up test so each year the annual check-up takes longer and longer. Every time something suspicious turns up there are tests to prove the finding is nothing after all. This year, my breast sonogram showed a small mass. The doctor in charge of the results said oh, it's very small, let's just observe. I was happy to just observe but then I said to myself, better to see what it is so I asked her to refer me to a specialist. The specialist said it needs to be operated and after it's removed they will do a biopsy. THUS, started to unfold what every woman fears, what if it's cancer. So, then I was referred to another specialist who does a new procedure called a mammotome. THis is only done here at one hospital but it is the least invasive procedure. So, I scheduled it right away. I was surprised my son who has been in New York for a year arrived the eve of the operation. So, to make a long story short. I had the operation under general anesthesia and it was benign SO no problem!!!! But if I had not gone to the specialist it would still be growing and the operation would have been more serious. The lesson I learned is ALWAYS take care of whatever needs to be checked out. I felt very sorry for myself when I first heard I have a breast mass but then I REALIZED many women have them and don't know it because they don't have check ups. They may not be able to afford the check up or the expensive operation. So, I remind myself that I must work hard to share whatever it is I have to share with the less fortunate because I have more in life financially. Sharing doesn't cost anything most of the time. . . STORY WIZARD 29 My first job was babysitting, where I got paid 50 cents an hour. What I remember the most about it is that it was so scary to be in the house of other people late at night waiting for the parents to come home. I would keep checking if I had locked all the doors and would do everything I could think of to try to stay awake. STORY 28 What about me would surprise everyone at our high school reunion? Maybe that I have two children who are senators in the Senate of the PHILIPPINES, because it still surprises me and them too!!!! STORY WIZARD 27 My oldest friend is Marlene Coe. She lived out in the country like me. We rode the same school bus, both had older sisters and lived close enough that we could bike to each other's houses. We met in 2nd grade. I don't know why we clicked....I guess there is always something inside people that draw them together which is hard to understand. Later in life it is common beliefs or interests but early in life I don't know what it is. STORY WIZARD 26 In ten years I hope to be STILL ALIVE and ENJOYING LIFE and DEEPLY PASSIONATELY IN LOVE!!!! STORY WIZARD 25 If I get one do-over, what do I do differently? Hmmmm, that's a good question. Sometimes I have said that I would have taken library science instead of teaching because I love books but I also enjoyed and made good use of my educational background in teaching so maybe....not that. Well, this is it. . . . I would have been a better marriage partner. I didn't expect my husband to die so young and I would have spend less time complaining and more time doing things better. Story 24 No trophies on my mantel.... A big ...Expand for more
victory? Making my first and second sales of my little giveaway books. My daughter, before she became a senator, was a lawyer but her sideline was she had an educational toy business. She sold my books to pharmaceutical companies in two huge sales. (They used them for giveaways.) The first sale was 20,000 of each of 24 different titles and the second sale was 67,000 copies of each of another 20 titles.....SO, that was a huge sale!!!! THEN, she became a senator and no more times for sales....So......a short, brief stay on top of the bestseller list for me as an author. WHAT'S THE WEIRDEST JOB I EVER HAD, story Wizard 22 I am sure I must have had a weird job but right now I can't think of any. I will write it when it comes to my memory......Oh, remember now. When I was seven my dad hired me to pull nails out of old wood he bought. He paid me a penny per nail..... Idea 21 of Story Wizard Do I still dress style-wise the way I did ten or 20 years ago? Well, I always tried to dress stylish though earlier in life I didn't have that much money to buy what I wanted. But I felt stylish. Then, I got married and could afford more expensive, stylish things. Now, I am a widow and back to a tight budget....still trying though to be stylish. STORY WIZARD 20 My best friend would tell you I'm humorous but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as quiet and reserved. WHAT HAPPENED TO MY FIRST CRUSH IDEA 19 I got to meet him in 2004 after not seeing him for 42 years. He turned out a fine young man!!!!! IDEA 18 WORKING HARD? I retired as a school directress of my old school after 17 years. I also worked as a kindergarten and grade one and prep teacher. But i started writing children's books after I retired and it's so MUCH FUN!!!! SO, yes, I am working but it is the best job in the world and that's terrific, isn't it? TO LOVE your WORK is one of life's greatest blessings. Story WIZARD 16 At this moment right now, typing this I am truly happy. But it would also be truly happy to be on a vacation, in a beautiful suite overlooking the sea, eating from room service with a man I love or second choice, a good friend. STORY WIZARD 15 Yes, I lived in a dorm for a short while in college. I think I was one of the few people who LOVED DORM FOOD. In my one year at Henry Ford Hospital , school of nursing before college I also lived in a dorm like home but it was more like an apartment house. I really enjoyed having my own beautiful bathroom and I also loved the food there too. STORY WIZARD 14 If I won one hundred million dollars, I'd give some of it to my sister, then spend the rest on putting up schools and good libraries here in the PHILIPPINES, and take a nice vacation and budget and save the rest for other good causes that may arise later in life. There are about fifty pesos to a dollar here in the PHILIPPINES so one hundred million US dollars is such a huge amount of money!!!!! Story Wizard 13 What teacher would I like to see? My supervising teacher when I did my student teaching while at the University of MICHIGAN. She had very high hopes for me, higher than I had for myself and she believed in me. I would love to share with her my teaching career and especially the inspiration she gave me. Story Wizard 12 What have I learned from my children? When my children became adults I had to remind myself over and over to respect them as adults and listen to them carefully as I would to other adults. Sometimes it's hard to forget we are parents and we treat our adult kids as children. I have also learned FAITH from my children. Many times they have reminded me that GOD has a plan (especially at my lowest moments when my husband was sick). Idea 11 If I could improve my home, I'd build an outdoor porch, right outside my bedroom window so I could sneak out my window and be outdoors.(I'm on the second floor of our house.) I will add an entrance that came straight up to my room so I don't need to pass through my house to get to my room. My dream home would be on the sea but with a mall just under my window also..... Idea l0 Life doesn't always turn out the way we expect. My biggest surprise was that I became a widow and was left alone with my kids when they probably needed their dad the most (during their political careers.) idea 9 Share my obsessions....right now I am obsessed with classmates.com Idea 8 The one person from my past who I would most like to see again? THat answer is the same as what happened to your old crush? Later, i will look what idea number that was..... Idea 7, Where have I lived and why? I live in the PHILIPPINES because I married a FILIPINO and he loved his country and wanted to raise his children here and use his education here to help the FILIPINO people. Idea 6 of Story Wizard My inspiration comes from strong women figures I have come across on my path through life, Reta Mosshamer, Metha Coe, my pastor's wife, RUTH, my favorite aunt, Aunt Vivian.....I am also inspired by other people's faith and the things they can overcome through their faith in God. Story Wizard 5 If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have my driver nearby (for peace of mind), money in my pocket for my coffee break, and my own space when I get home to be able to deal with the day to day. Story Wizard idea 4 What's the wildest thing I ever did in school? I went with a friend to Chicago without telling anyone. It turned out to be a very bad trip and later I regretted that I hadn't told anyone where I would be in case I couldn't have gotten out of the bad situation I found myself in. Idea 3, How do I blow off steam? I text my closest friends and rand and rave, have a glass of wine, call my pastor, cry and feel sorry for myself, go to a movie or go shopping. Idea 2. I always wanted to write books when I grew up. As it turns out, I did write books but only after I retired from a long teaching career. I also believe that my years teaching enabled me to write the books I now write because I know what children need to help them when they do not have libraries full of books to choose from. Idea l...How do I hope old friends will remember me? Hmmm, i wish I didn't care what others , even friends think of me or how they remember me...but alas,.... I would like to be remembered as......a nice person, a good friend, a good listener, generous, beautiful, humorous, fun to be with, talented, a good dancer (which I am not!) Oh, lots of things, a good mother.....a person of integrity.....a good daughter, a good sister...
