Sandra's Story

Wow, 30 years, you are so kidding me! I don't know about the rest of you but I still don't feel very grown up most of the time. Growing older, maybe, growing up,not so much, just more obligations. First off, can I just say how blown away I am by the bios. It must have taken me a long time to mature as it took me a long time to give up my fun single life to settle down, get married and have kids. And some of you have grandkids? That I cannot even comprehend! I feel as if I have come full circle, both personally and professionally. Up until 10 years ago, my entire life was about my job, my money and the power that money yielded me. You get the car, the house, the watch and then you say, "Is this it?" I was so driven and focused on my career that it shut my eyes to other areas of joy. Not any more. My children and my family are my focus and my career comes after that. I met my husband 20 years ago in Del Mar, California. He had just graduated college where he attended on a full ride golf scholarship (Yea, he's a pretty good golfer!) He is Canadian and he had just returned to San Diego to look for a job in the golf business. Neither one of us was looking for love but I guess that is when it happens. We dated for 8 years before we got married and we have been married for 12 years. His name is Tom and he is the most amazing and perfectly balanced person I have ever known. I fell in love with him for his playfulness, maturity, joy of life, great morals and love of his family. We were married for 3 years before we decided to have kids. I never felt pressured by the whole biological clock thing and was never one who just had to have kids or couldn't wait to have kids. We were living in Chicago when we got married and were not quite ready to start a family as we knew we were ready to relocate, me hoping for somewhere warmer. We loved Chicago but the weather is so abusive I didn't want to stay. Since Tom is Canadian, he was certainly used to the cold and the seasons. After my 39th birthday I figured if we were going to do this kid thing, let's do it. I had my first daughter 1 month before my 40th birthday. Her name is McKenna and she is a beautiful and sweet little person. She is a ...Expand for more
girly-girl and has amazing coordination and poise (not from me!). Her first love is ballet, her second is gymnastics and she is learning to play the violin. She just turned 9 in February and is all about her loose teeth, riding her bike and boogie boarding at the beach. My second daughter was born 3 years later. Her name is Payton and she is the complete opposite of McKenna. She is a little jock and she loves to run, sweat and get dirty. She did the whole dance thing but is more suited towards more athletic sports like karate, soccer or baseball, like mommy was. Her main goal in life seems to be to irritate her sister. Actually, they play quite well together most of the time but Payton sure knows which buttons to press to get her sister's attention. Our home is a fun place where all our kid's friends love to hang out and play. I stayed home with the girls 4 years full time, 3 years part time and just went back to work full time in 2008, when we moved back to San Diego from Orange County. Being off work was tough for me at first as when I quit work it was as if I had lost my entire identity. I went from money earner to money beggar, from high fashion business suits to sweats and a baseball hat and from Nordstrom's half yearly sales to weekly sales at Target. I am not complaining as it was a wonderful and fulfilling gift to be able to be with my daughter's while they were so young. But, I must say, it is now nice to have both of them in school and be back to work. Work is so much easier than staying home with the kids, full time, by a long shot and it offers me the balance that I needed. As for work, I am still selling real estate. I sold new homes for developers for 15 years and that was a perfect fit for me at the time. When we moved back to San Diego last year, I decided to go back to work full time but I needed a lot more flexibility now with the kids. So, I returned to my roots, re-sales, and I joined one of the top selling real estate teams in Coastal North San Diego County. My team believes in a balance between your career and your family so it is an absolutely perfect fit. So, that wraps it up for me. It is a great life, live it. Sandy
