Sandy's Story

I have such great memories of High School and all the years before, all the way back from the very beginning in Kindergarten. I was very fortunate to always have extremely nice friends that were always kind, intelligent and an inspiration. We received a great education by excellent teachers and it was fun reading books at the old library, and then later doing research at the new library. We grew up during an awakening of awareness of nature and conservation, of people and cultures, of struggles and war, all around the world. Just walking to and from school together were wonderful times. Slay riding on the big hill behind Saddle Rock Elementary School was fantastic. Sailing in Little Neck Bay was phenomenal. I also very much enjoyed bike riding all the way around Great Neck though Kings Point. Does anyone remember the penny candy store on Steamboat Road? It was so great taking the train into the city together. Best of all were just play dates and sleep overs at each other's homes. We used to enjoy spending the day walking down Middle Neck Road through town. During our elementary school years we played soccer baseball on the cul-de-sac. I was asked by my brother, Monte, to convince my parents to move to Florida during junior year as he needed to be a resident of Florida to get accepted to medical school there, as he was 4 years older than me. I missed senior year and unfortunately I wasn't good at staying in contact with good friends. I apologize. I taught math, mostly geometry and algebra, for 37 years and retired in June, 2014. I am married to Gary Kornheiser from Farmingdale, Long Island, NY. He teaches art, is a photographer and we have enjoyed traveling together. We used to live in Boca Raton, FL where I graduated from Florida Atlantic University. I very much missed the small town feeling and friends in Great Neck, and was finally able to recreate this in Boca Raton, which beck in the 1970's was a small town. We have now moved to the top of a mountain in the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina where some of our neighbors are...Expand for more
black bears. I just published a children’s book, The Legend of Lazy Bear. Now I am writing a children's book about two donkeys who have a good time visiting waterfalls and historical sites around town. My brother passed away unexpectedly April 9, 2015 from an aneurysm at 64 years of age. This has awakened my need for connections, first to notify his friends, as I have found it very uncomfortable to wonder why I lost contact with someone, only to find out many years later, that it was because they had died. This includes Robert Gurvitz. We had been e-mailing and I lost contact. In 2006, I googled Robert and found his obituary from 2002. He is survived by his beloved wife and 2 children. I posted 100 photos on Monte's NYTimes Legacy.com Obituary Guest Book to share with his friends. The biggest drive in my life has been my love of animals and nature and concern for the environment. It is mind boggling that when we were in high school, they had the first Earth Day, April 22, 1970, and it is now so many years later, but the earth is in a much more dangerous situation. Likewise, we all hoped there would be no more war or persecution. My other interests are doing art including Adobe Photoshop, and studying local pioneer history. If you haven't yet done this, you can read on the Great Neck Library website, where they have excellent historical information, including that back in the 1800's, steamboats used to take the men to and from Wall Street and midtown Manhattan from the pier at the end of Steamboat Road. Saddle Rock was a ranch named Saddle Rock with a very interesting history. The Saddle Rock Grist Mill is an extremely rare tidal grist mill historical site that needs restoring. We were very lucky back in the 1960’s to be able to visit the Grist Mill and see corn get ground. They even gave us a little bag of cornmeal as we left. The history of Great Neck is fascinating. The historical society is working very hard saving Steppingstone Lighthouse. Best regards, -Sandy Kornheiser
