Rick's Story

After getting teaching credentials at both SDSU and UCLA I taught, here in San Diego, at the high school level for four years. Upon my return from a three month summer trip to Europe, which turned into four, I was left without a teaching position . With my love for snow skiing, I soon found skiing on days other than the normal crowded school holidays was wonderful. A job working for someone else getting 2-3 weeks of vacation a year just wouldn't do for skiing and all the other traveling I wanted to do. With a college background in Architecture, Photography and Drafting, and a family background with swimming pools, I started a swimming pool and spa construction company. Not exactly what I went to school for, but do use aspects of all. We design/build high-end swimming pools, spas and water features. For those who have owned your own company or have heard, the hours can be brutal, but finding time to play has always been a priority.to me. Wasn't until I was 30 that I married Sara, a fellow South Mission Beach-er, with the same love for ...Expand for more
travel and skiing. Although she was and still is an elementary school teacher, she taught at a year-round school for many years so a lot of four season traveling could take place. A couple of years before our daughter was born, we made the move off the coast to Poway where at least we can still see the ocean. When Ashley started elementary school, Sara changed to a traditional school schedule to coincide with hers. Funny how some things can change with having a child. After 20 years of being away from the traditional school holiday schedule we found ourselves reverting back to it. Back then, that schedule influenced my career choices, yet the change back provided for the opportunity to bestow the travel spirit into our daughter. Ashley has traveled extensively, loves the outdoors like me and.is now away at college in Chico, CA. majoring in Environmental Biology. I was set up to retire in '08, and Sara in '09, before the market and real estate declined. We're both going to go a couple more years. Can't wait for no schedule at all. .
