Ronnie's Story
I don't think I have ever written about who I am. I mean, who cares, right? If there is anyone out there who does then here it goes. I was a proud member of the kids who grew up on 1st ave in Asbury. I think on that block my mom once figured out that there were 150 kids all within 4 or 5 years of each other. It was a wonderful beginning. We had our own team and competed against those guys from 4th ave. It was a fun time in life. To this day I remain friends with many from that block and do care deeply about their lives. Maybe that is who I am. I always remember being caring about others. Life was difficult for our parents. Most were blue collar who struggled just to make ends meet. I learned early from them to care about others. I don't believe that as a young kid I had any grand desires. I began playing drums at 13 and enjoyed being part of music in general. I didn't think I would become a Buddy Rich but I thought I could make a living at it. I bet that most of my classmates didnt know that I did that. In fact, I stopped playing professionally just a few years back due to health reasons and actually having had enough of what was a tough but enjoyable vocation. It did pay my way through college and as most classmates probably new me after graduating was as a pharmacist. Yes, I was a average student in school but I believe that it was due to a lack of focus on school. There was baseball and music and girls. After all, I needed a life and I could not compete with those who were in the smarter kids classes. That high IQ level was their gift and mine was musical talent. As a Pharmacist I was able to utilize the caring part of me. I really did care about our patients. I worked mostly in a hospital environment. The retail drug store thing was just not for me. aved some peoples lives as a hospital pharmacist. That's a whole other story. In high school I believe I was relatively normal. The funniest thing that I recall happening to me was when I was the Master of Ceremonies for the student varieties show. My CO-MC who shall remain nameless was stoned drunk prior to the opening of the show. Getting through that without loosing it was, memorable. Or then there was the time when we put a band and singing group together and did a show at the Worlds fair in NY. The problem was we had to haul all of our equipment to the NJ pavillion which happened to be next to the Unisphere. That was located in the middle of the park. What a time we had. Oh yea, there was the freshman year St. Patricks day parade. It was so cold that the heads on the snare drums cracked. Marty Fried who later was part of a group that had a hit record. Red Rubber Ball and they also did Turn Down Day. The name of the band was the Cyrcle or Circle. He was a Senior drummer and then there was Billy Rubin, another Senior. Billy passed away at a young age. Billy and I shared some drum work over the years and I will remember him forever. He was a good drummer and one heck of a funny guy. In high school both of those guys were nuts. It was so cold the day of the parade that while the band was on a side street the 3 of us, me, the little Freshman and the two Seniors decided to go into this hotel lobby. Next thing I know we are negotiating with a few of the local hookers. As this is going on the band starts to march and is leaving the street. Our drums were laying on the street as the band marched away while we were doing serious business in the warm lobby. We couldnt get the deal and we did catch up with the rest of the band. Again, memorable. More to come when I have time.
