Scot's Story

I was born in Chester, PA and I am a lifetime Philadelphia everything fan... Sixers, Phillies, Eagles, Flyers, etc. I moved to Lewes when I was 10 because my family wanted to live at the beach. My first job was at the Board of Public Works in Lewes, where I got paid $3.50/hr (minimum wage) to paint fences and cut grass for the town of Lewes. I graduated from Cape in 1988 and the University of Delaware in 1992. I finally went back to school at Delware State University and received my masters in 2007 (May). This made me the first of my family to attend and graduate college. I am a social studies teacher at Milford High School, have been teaching for 10 years and I am currently looking for administrative positions. I wanted to be a baseball player when I grew up but mono (11th grade) and broken finger (12th grade) curtailed my baseball career. I am currently 38 years old, married and have two children (Tyler, age 5 and Taylor, age 3). I spend almost each and every waking moment with my kids :) I have always been known as a hard worker. In a career as a restaurant manager (Roadhouse Steak Joint), general manager (Jungle Jim's), and teacher (Positive Outcomes Charter School, Laurel and Milford High Schools), I have always given everything that I have each day. It agitates me when I meet people that are lazy and want to blame life's troubles on everyone else. The greatest challenge I faced in my teaching career was when I taught at Positive Outcomes Charter School (POCS) in my first year of teaching. The first year is always tough as a teacher. But, my experience was tough because I had six preps a day at a school where 25 percent of the student populat...Expand for more
ion was special ed. with only one paraprofessional who shadowed one student. The students at this school were the ones who kicked out of their home district and had to work their way back into that district or graduate at POCS. It was not a positive learning environment and there was no administrative support. I was up until 2-3 in the morning every day planning and grading because I had to make up all my own material after providing my own books (They had no hsitory books there when I first started.). I also wrote the social studies curriculum the one year I was there as a first year teacher. Some of my greatest accomplishments have been as a two-time state champion instructor of the We the People class representing the state of Delaware. Another accomplishment I am proud of was as the coach of the winning team (Roadhouse Steak Joint) at the Bar and Restaurant Olympics (cannot remember what year that was???). I also lost in the Keg Final in the Bar and Restaurant Volleyball Championship as coach and participant for the Lighthouse Restaurant in Lewes. One last noteworthy achievement was to finish in the top three two of the last three years for Teacher of the Year at Milford High School. I also won league high average in bowling when I was a teenager and won a league championship as well. My greatest thrills, of course, were the birth of my son and daughter :) One of my weaknesses is that I am my own worst critic. I do not know when to take a step back sometimes and say I have tried my best and live for another day. Personally, I like to think of myself as someone that would help a friend and family member in any way I can. I am also a good listener.
