Scott's Story
Life!
... and then there's the love of one's life....
We lived next door to each other at UMass for a year, started dating, and then tied the knot a year later, eloping and getting married on a beach in North Carolina, where I was stationed. We had our thirty-second wedding anniversary this year.
Critters...
The golden retriever finally went on to that big pheasant field in the sky. With kids graduated and no one home all day, haven't replaced her, but looking at some ideas... need a dog that can hike in big mountains!
Kiddos...
Kate(23) is a beautiful kid, auburn red hair, and graduated college president of her senior class. She is working as a literary agent in Boston, making good money reading and evaluating novels, finding the next JK Rowling we hope.. Tough life! Meaghan(22) is the other beautiful kid, and smart too! She was valedictorian of her class, and is a Senior at Brown University in Providence, RI. Her plans include NYU Law. I guess I could brag a long time about them, but they're just wonderful, keep me hopping, but still can't drink the old man under the table.
My Job
After two years at UMass/Amherst, I got bored and joined the Marines, looking for a little "adventure." Found that. I was a grunt and then got sent to aviation training, where I was recommended for commissioning. Became an officer, and left three years later, as I had made captain, but could advance no further without the "olde" college degree. Moved to Maine, went back to school, and then found there was quite a demand for former Marine officers in management. Did that for a few years, and then discovered teaching. I've been doing that ever since, and really enjoy it. I taught American History and Math for 7th an...Expand for more
d 8th graders for six years, and now teach high school, 10th and 11th grade, American Studies, and AP Modern European History. I've been a coach for soccer, basketball, volleyball, and baseball, even a dramatics director for 6 years. It's fun to have former students returning to visit with their own kids, and am very leery of former students asking me not to retire until I've taught their own. Good God.....! My hair is gray. No,... white. Hell, it's still there.
Two years ago May, I took 35 kids to France, and survived a pulmonary embolism from the effects of the flight after returning, a purely statistical fluke. 1 in 4,500 people who fly has it happen, so be careful. Scary. Count your blessings everyday. No long term effects other than caution and an aspirin a day.
Took 20 kids to Italy this past May, and still gung ho. It was a friggin blast! Ireland in 2010!
We live in Yarmouth, Maine, just above Portland, about 2 hrs north of Boston, and have a built a great addition to our house, so it looks back on our wooded acres; you don't even know you're in a town. I still enjoy building stuff. Finished a 20 x 24, 15' high shed by myself last summer, and am clearing out stumps and undergrowth to build a dry-laid stonewall, a passion. Moving rocks and stone is pure grunt work, perfect after lecturing on the threads of European philosophy for nine months.
If you're ever up this way, give a call and stop by for a visit. We'll treat you to Maine hospitality (I think that's Pabst and chowder). We're in the book. The stars and ocean up here are truly beautiful. I hike as much as I can, and am stretching out now for some treks in the Rockies. Never mind the snow; it melts.
