Scott Darragh:

CLASS OF 1983

Scott's Story

I have now been with the Michigan Department of Treasury for almost 14 years. My wife Kendel and I have two girls, Elise (10) and Lydia (4). We live in the country around Lansing, between DeWitt, Laingsburg, and St. Johns. Since the last reunion we completed our adoption of Lydia in 2010. She was born in central China with albinism, which makes her Asian decent somewhat difficult to recognize at first. We spent two weeks in various parts of China completing the adoption and really enjoyed the food. Lydia has adjusted well to life in rural Clinton County and is really looking forward to kindergarten in the fall. Our oldest daughter has had an eventful past year. There is reportedly a Chinese curse, "May you live in interesting times." Well the past year has been interesting. As school let out in June 2012 Elise began to experience headaches. By late June she was also having bouts with vomitting to go along with the headaches. In late July she was diagnosed with a brain tumor near her cerebellum and brain stem. Her 10th birthday was spent at Sparrow Hospital awaiting surgery. The surgery was...Expand for more
successful and the tumor was removed (still gone as of March 2013) but the tumor and surgery left Elise with neurological damage, especially on her right side. Pediatric rehabilitation has given her back much of her strength and movement. She is enjoying being back in school and stands to move on into 6th grade with her class. The whole experience has been part terrifying and part amazing. We continue to hope for a full(er) recovery and Elise deserves so much credit for her hard work. Beyond our experiences with the girls life seems so mundane. I'm much more familiar with how the brain works than I was previously. We've met and worked with some amazing people. The staff in Sparrow's pediatric ICU are terrific, they spend almost as much time caring for the parents as for the children. Elise's neuro-surgeon was superb. We have also spent a lot of time with therapists, both at Mott in Ann Arbor and now back at Sparrow. Life is starting to get back to a bit of normalcy, which is good. We're hoping for a much more normal summer in 2013. I hope life is more normal for anyone reading this. Scott
