I would rather have 15 minutes of wonderful then a life of nothing special...Shelby in Steel Magnolias If you don't have anything nice to say come sit by me...Steel Magnolias". More about Scott:"I can honestly say I had two different lives. One before having HIV and one after. I worked up to three jobs had a condo a great car and a pretty wonderful life. Not knowing I had HIV I contracted systemic MRSA and I came very close to dying. I lost my jobs car house and came not only close to being homeless but losing absolutely everything. Since I didn't think I was going to survive I went from using meth to injecting meth. I was on high doses of antibiotics which gave me a systemic yeast infection at the same time. That gave me a horrible amount of pain because it was in my intestinal track and every day I was in excruciating pain after I ate. I couldn't get my Meds for a couple of years and I had no idea how to advocate for myself. I got into a relationship that would have been able to sustain itself if we had both not been abusing drugs. I struggled with misdiagnosis and a lack of knowledge of the disease I had. I gave up at the end and overdosed on GHB because both myself and my partner at the time needed an intervention. I went through a horrible detox at home and was really unsure if I could take care...Expand for more
of myself. My family came and moved me back to Oregon. I can honestly say that move not only saved my life but changed it as well. I went down to the local HIV Agency, HIV Alliance and volunteered at the Needle Exchange and started to work with others and realized I could make a difference for those struggling with the issues of drug dependency. I could meet people where they are in life and get them information and resources so they can make better decisions. I can be there for them if they want to stop and talk them through the next steps. I realized if I can do this for the aspect of who I was I had better do this for the rest of me. I went into HIV Testing and MSM Outreach. I use the same harm reduction techniques in those programs and to much success. I realized that there is very little information being passed along to those living with HIV/AIDS and that there is much incorrect information out there being accepted as fact. I see much stigma out there that just isn't true. So after volunteering over 670 hours the HIV Alliance offered me a job. I am proud of myself for getting out of drugs and for making a difference not only in the community at large but especially those in the gay community and those living with HIV/AIDS. I live my life as an out gay man so why shouldn't I live my life as an out person living with HIV/AIDS. Its the only way I can see bringing about an end to stigma. I want to also let people know that not taking care of yourself when you have HIV can bring a lack of options available to you when you finally start. The last thing is that for 20 years I lived in Palm Springs and I feel so attached to the town and it's people that I one day want to go back and share with my community there the things I have learned so it too will be a better healthier place to live and maybe I can help stem the rate of new infections from HIV in a place I hold dear to my heart. That is the legacy I want to leave behind for the next generation.".
