Scott's Story

I went to UConn, graduating in 1981 with an engineering degree (big surprise there). My family moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1980, and I moved to downtown Boston in 1981. Worked for several good firms in Boston and environs until a downturn in the early '90s kept me out of 'real' work longer than I wanted. IBM, of all companies, offered me a very good position in Burlington VT, so I moved there for what I thought would be 2 or 3 years in 1993. So here it is 2016 and I'm still in Burlington VT. I got married in 2007, and we're both open to moving nearly anywhere in the world, should a good opportunity present itself. My wife was a recent VT transplant from Seattle, and is a psychologist / therapist, ten years my junior. Despite (or because of) her professional skills with children, we barely decided not to have our own kids, a decision one can never be certain is for the best. In the meantime I seem to have made up for the jock I never was at NHS. Competitive running, road bicycle racing, mountain bike racing, semi-pro regional motorcycle roadracing, racquetball leagues, backpacking, downhill skiing around the country. And a lot more chill activities too. Within the context of working full-time for fairly conventional companies, I've extracted as much travel time as I could (unpaid time off is key!), both around the world, and throughout the US and Canada. We took two honeymoons, first a 10-day motorcycle trip up the St Lawrence River in Quebec, then a month all over Thailand. Motorcy...Expand for more
cle touring the Alps, mountain biking in Moab and the West, lots of time spent in California in the '80s, and spent months in Spain walking the entire Camino de Santiago in 2014. I still get down to Fairfield County to see friends a couple times a year; it used to be far more often soon after I left, despite no family there. My extended family is Boston-based, so I'm there more often as I have more connections there, it's closer, I spent a dozen years there as an adult, and it's a real city. But it is nice to have nuclear family in Santa Fe, cos it's a great place to visit, though I wouldn't want to live there. Some things from NHS haven't changed. I'm still a music junkie, though my tastes have broadened far beyond the lame Nektar quote in our yearbook. Still attending concerts locally and in Montreal, and was a concert junkie in Boston. Road and mountain biking mostly locally these days, though still racing club events. Lest this read as another upper-middle-class fairy tale starting in Norwalk and continuing happily ever after, my athletic do-anything wife contracted long-term Lyme Disease in 2008 and ever since has been struggling with pain and loss of physical functionality issues. And I got laid off in 2009 and have yet to secure sustainable, full-time, satisfying, professional work, locally or throughout North America. So sure I left a lot of stuff out, I have 17000 characters remaining to type in this box, but hit me up if I haven't told you enough. Wish others were as verbose :-)
