Scott's Story

Life God sure works in strange ways "What doesn't kill, you makes you stronger"... At the time I sure didn't think so, but I now I find myself in a much better place in life. School I guess this is where I'm supposed to reflect back on my High School years? My biggest regret? Not asking Brenda Miluskewicz out. The meanest thing I ever did? Telling Kathy Trinkle scary stories so I could watch her faint. The worst date? Kathie Archer: The person that gave me the hardest time in high school? Well as weird as it may seem, the person that made my time in high school hell was Robert Rodd. (Swim Team) My strongest stroke had always been the breast stroke and in fact I had won the time trials used to determine what stroke we were going to swim for the team. But I wasn't one of Rodd's pets, so I got assigned to events I had never shown any ability for, backstroke and the 500 free. My freshmen year wasn't anything great. My sophomore year was a different story. I had begun to win all my events and significantly improved my times. However, my improvements went unnoticed and unrewarded. One of Rod's pets was given The Most Improved award even though the pet never even managed to match any of his times from the season before. My Junior year I was on the 400 free relay for league. We were not expected to place, but we did. I do understand why I got bumped. The listed sub had a faster 100 free time then I did. However, Rodd didn't let me be the sub for the team I helped into the finals. Instead he booted me completely off the team and replaced me with one of his freshmen pets;who I might add had a slower 100 time then I. I now had to stay at school while the team I helped into the North Cal Competition went to compete. Needless to say I wasn't too disappointed when I found out that the team didn't even match the time that qualified them. (water polo) My junior year Mark Simpson & I played the entire season on varsity. During the league game however, he never let us see any game time, which is why we didn't letter our junior year. We sat in the water watching Rodd put beg...Expand for more
inners like John Perata in over us. John became a good player later but at this time he was a beginner and had the ball stolen from him just about every time he touched it. I still get a chuckle sometimes remembering Mark & I rooting against our team so we could go home. My senior year I was elected team captain, well until Rod deiced to do re-votes and lobby against me. I was told that they had 3 or 4 votes before Rod finally gave up and decided that we would have tri-captains that year. I knew Rodd didn't appreciate my ability. However, during league I was approached by three different coaches (there were only 5 teams in our league). They wanted to know if I planned to play water polo in college. The San Ramon coach even suggested a college for me to pursue because of their water polo program. I really thought I was going to get voted All-League, since coaches couldn't vote for anyone on their own team. Seniors had always been nominated for All-League. This had always been our tradition. Rodd however, decided to break with tradition and nominated some of his pets instead (all non seniors, except for Ray Velasco). Since I was never nominated, I will never know if I would have been voted All-League or not. I can only speculate. So anyway, now you know why I really didn't care much for Mr. Robert Rodd. College I had so much fun during these years, but I wouldn't want to relive them. I made some pretty bad decisions that almost derailed my dream of becoming a teacher. If not for my mom, I think I would have given up. Workplace I know I wasn't the greatest teacher in my first two years. Though I do have some regrets, life does move on and I certainly have. I've learned a lot since those days and I think I am a better teacher because of it. I found a place where I'm happy and the people I work with are great. My teaching style works here and is appreciated. I love what I'm doing and wouldn't do anything else in the world. I hope you have the courage to pursue your dreams in spite of the odds, like I have. There is nothing more rewarding then to enjoy the work you do.
