Retired December 26, 2000
After my wife and children, some of my best memories, so far, recount the social aspects of my years in school.
I hear people ask "what would you have done differently." My take is that if you have a balloon and poke your finger into it the ballon is affected somewhere else. Timing is all important in life. My worst marriage gave me my children. So go figure.
I was blessed with a career in the air for nearly 23000 hours that I thoroughly enjoyed for 40 years right to the point the federal government terminated me by law at age 60.
I just retired my captain hat and put on my vineyard owner hat to continue life's adventure with my lovely wife Bonnie.
Now in 2013 final retirement has arrived. Our Ivy Glen Vineyard is in good hands. Soon all our bulk wine will be sold. Real days off ...Expand for more
are a beacon.
Workplace
Hired as a pilot with American Airlines in 1965. Retired December 2000 by Federal government decree that no pilot over age 60 will fly passengers in Air Transportation. A few years later mandatory retirement was raised to 65. Flying was my life blood and I felt betrayed at forced retirement. Now reflecting. Even as flying was my life age 62 would have been my limit not due to health but likely would become an issue with long range international flight work conditions.
22,843 flying hours.
777 International Captain last assignment.
Military
I entered the Naval Aviation Cadet program in August 1960 at Mainside Pensacola, Florida.
Primary flight training at Saufley VT1, Basic at NAS Whiting Field, Florida VT2 and VT3.
Carrier Qual back to Saufley and VT5.
Advanced flight at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas VT30 flying Douglas AD Skyraiders.
Commissioned Ensign, USNR, February 1962.
NAS Moffett Field VA122 Replacement Air Group.
Fleet Squadron VA95 flying the AD with duty at Moffett Field, Alameda, Lemoore and USS Ranger, CAG-9.
Vietnam 1964-1965
Air Combat Medal
Navy Commendation Medal
Expeditionary Forces Medal
