Scott's Story

Life I was married for 18 years to the always hilarious and wonderful, Laurie Rosenbach. We have two children, Rhiannon (4/21/78)and Toby (10/18/83). Rhiannon had a daughter in Jan 2000, Courtney. Toby and Kyla have two daughters Arya, (8/24/15) and Freya (1/11/2000). I served in the Marine Corps for four years. This was strictly to get the GI bill and prove to my brother that I was as strong as he was. (What a dumb thing to do!)I got my BS in Managerial Accounting from Metro State in '86. School I went to Dupont elementary in Commerce City from first through sixth grade. I then moved on to Adams City Junior High for seventh through ninth. My sophomore year I was at Adams City High School. My junior and senior years I ended up at William C. Hinkley High School in Aurora. College I went to Metropolitan State College from Sept 1980 to May 1986. I majored in Managerial Accounting. Workplace During my senior year in high school I was the night manager of Burger King on Colfax and Alton. I was fired in June of '74 when we were robbed. I started working at the Safeway Bread plant in Aug of '74. I worked there until Feb of '76, when I took a military leave to go into the Marine Corps. I was in the Marine Corps until February of '80, when I returned to the bread plant and went back to college. I worked full time at the bread plant and went to Metro graduating in '86. Of course, that was about the time that the oil companies were letting their accountants go so an inexperienced college graduate had no chance of getting a job. In July of '88 UNICOR Federal Prison Industries offered me a cost accountant position. Everyone is a correctional officer first when you work for the Bureau of Prisons, so I went to beautiful South Carolina to learn how the Fed's do correctional work. After about two and a half years I moved over to the Institution side as a supervisory accountant. When a new supervisor was brought in from another institution, I...Expand for more
decided I needed to move on. I got a job with the Small Business Administration as a systems accountant. They were converting to a new system and I was tasked with learning how they could do their work in this new system. It was a blast. I then became the fiscal officer and supervised anywhere from 15 to 25 employees depending on the number of disasters we were working. After about two years of that I was asked to learn how the DC office does loan accounting and bring the function to Denver. I traveled to DC a week a month for about a year. I then trained about ten accountants on how to do loan accounting. This worked so well that management decided to transfer financial reporting to Denver as well. I was back to my monthly DC trips. After I learned this and taught some new accountants how to do financial reporting it was time to get the surety bond guarantee program off of the aging main frame and into the core financial system. Once this was completed and I could see that SBA was not going to promote me to a GS-14 I decided I needed to move on. I got a job as a system accountant with the Bureau of Reclamation. After a year I was asked if I was interested in becoming a supervisory accountant. I transferred to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement as a GS-14, Supervisory Accountant. I ran the accounting IT shop. I retired from there on July 31, 2014. Military I spent four years in the Marine Corps. I went to basic in San Diego. I then went to Intelligence Specialist school on Coronado Island in CA. I was transferred to the 2d US Service Support Group at Camp Lejeune, NC. I was there for just over two years. I then went to the 4th Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan for a year. I also spent a couple of miserable weeks on manuevers in South Korea during this time. I finished out my tour with the 2d Marine Air Wing in Beaufort, SC. I reached the rank of Sgt. E-5 before my honorable discharge in February 1980.
