Scott's Story
When I finished training in 1995, I practiced all aspects of cardiothoracic surgery including performing open heart surgery and heart transplantation. In 2006, I began to specialize in non-cardiac thoracic surgery and lung transplantation. As of July 1st 2018, I now only perform foregut surgery, which involves surgery on the esophagus and stomach. This includes resections and reconstructions for esophageal and stomach cancers, and fixing botched anti-reflux and gastric bypass surgeries. ten for long periods of time. It may not be as romantic as heart surgery, but I actually find it more challenging. I was fortunate to spend a year training with probably the best foregut surgeon in the world in Los Angeles 1992-1993, and it is to his credit (Dr. Tom DeMeester) that I am now able to do what I do. I take no emergency call anymore, but continue to actively train the next generation of surgeons. I think fondly of my high school days, and enjoyed our 40th reunion.
