Cecilia's Story

Life I started out in Southern California (like, duh!) but became an Oregon transplant during the summer of 1998. A fair number of people from the southwest have moved up here and decided that it's not sunny enough, and turn around and head back to the lower latitudes. But not me. It might rain a lot, but it makes for a breathtaking landscape during the spring, summer and fall. Portland is next to the wilderness, yet it is intellectually stimulating, funky, full of art, neat little beer pubs with local entertainment (and speaking of beer...WOW). Numerous neighborhoods (known as "districts") ...each with its own flavor; a vast array of architecture; more diversity than I can begin to describe. In 2003, I moved to the San Francisco Bay area, where I stayed for three years, working as a college instructor, teaching veterinary technology. The really, really tough part was how much my heart ached, being so far from my kids. The Bay Area is also WAY expensive. WAY, WAY expensive. In December '06 I moved back to Oregon. I'm staying put. Sooo--my present family includes my son, age 26, who lives with his girlfriend a few miles from here, and my daughter, almost 25, who lives with her boyfriend less than ten miles the other direction. Then there are my two cats--Jasper and Nakori--who are kind of like substitute children...they are unspeakably cute, funny, and keep me entertained during those quiet times. Umm...so...yeah, there's a lot more to me than what I've just written. God, I'd hope so, considering high school graduation was 32 years ago. M'kay, I'm getting tired of talking about myself (even if I AM my favorite subject...*back to me* ;-D) I'm done with the gratuitous self-promotion for the time being. So read the other stuff, or go look at pictures! Go on, git! School Hmmm. Uh, yeah. High school years were "interesting". My favorite memories have absolutely NOTHING to do with academics. (Hey, at least I'm honest.) My history teacher called me a "seat warmer". The most amusing events took place in 11th grade. Fourth period lunch, spent off-campus. Rather than wasting our time on eating, we did scandalous things like driving around and smoking. Lunch period was followed by "Foods and Nutrition" (formerly known as Home Ec). How convenient was that?? One of my lunch friends and I were in that class together. More than once I recall us giggling like idiots. And some of the things we were cooking smelled REALLY GOOD. =o) ...finding someone wearing a black t-shirt and putting flour hand prints on his back. The unknown clown who unscrewed the top of my group's salt shaker and dumping a ton of the stuff on my spaghetti (d'oh!) Singing "Jungle Boogie". Getting caught smoking in the girls' bathroom by Mary With The Bicycle. Ditching school a few times to go to Seal Beach. Getting caught one time and being suspended for truancy...(oh, the pathos of it all...my partner in crime was also suspended and we spent that day...at Seal Beach.) Those truly gruesome, stretched-out, bile-yellow swim suits we had to wear for P.E. That utterly cool art class where I got to make...Expand for more
jewelry from sheet silver. That stupid, ugly, homemade tattoo of a heart that my friend and I inked on to my right pinky finger with black India ink and a piece of thread wound 'round a sewing needle. At age 16, I had no comprehension of how long "permanent" meant. (I had the tattoo removed.) Freaking out at the thought of the Year 2000...when I'd turn 43 (gasp!) It seemed unimaginable...I mean, reading Orwell's "1984" was weird enough. And Huxley's "Brave New World" was preposterous...I mean, really now...CLONING??? As if!! Music that takes me back to those times: Pink Floyd; Jethro Tull; Joe Walsh; Elton John; The Eagles. College College. Talk about a contrast! If High School could be summarized as The Lost Years...in college I was a straight-A student. It's just amazing what a difference *listening* can make. This would turn out to be invaluable when I went on to become a college instructor and mentored a number of students, several of whom were young women with domestic hardships or doubts about their abilities. It was immensely rewarding to be able to "give something back". Oh, who am I kidding? My students gave me as much, if not more, than I gave them. I still keep in touch with many of my former students. Music I associate with that period: Fleetwood Mac; Roxy Music; Peter Frampton; BeBop Deluxe; David Bowie. College is a turning point for many lives, so it holds a very special place in my heart. Workplace Work...hmm. Like most people, I started at the bottom rung of the ladder. And like most people, I started in food service/retail...waiting tables and other jobs that foster a nice, healthy dislike of people in general and customers in particular. After a few years of that, I joined the Army (yikes!) I can't say I was especially fond of the military way of life, but it wasn't a bad experience, either. Besides, if I hadn't joined up, the rest of my life would have turned out much differently. Yeah, I know, that's true of everyone, everywhere. Back to me. Cecilia + Army (5-10 men for every woman) = marriage, motherhood. Upon returning to work after my second child was born, I took a series of interesting positions before finally discovering my niche in 1992. I was hired as a receptionist at a small animal hospital, and from there I trained as a technician on the job. By 1998 I'd been promoted to a QA position in Portland, Oregon and became licensed in 2000. I worked as a critical care/E.R. tech at a fairly renowned 24-hour facility, where I also took on the daunting role of ordering all of the supplies for two clinics...valued at somewhere around 500K/year. In 2003, I became a college instructor, teaching the Veterinary Technology program at a career school in the San Francisco area, where I remained until September, 2006. Now I am back home in Portland, about to take on a lead technician position at a veterinary referral center. Dang! I don't think I'll ever get over the "new job jitters", although it's a definite confidence booster to update my resume and look at all the cool stuff I know how to do and the amazing people I've met along the way.

My daughter is undeniably beautiful.
I hope I never get so old...
As I travel the road of life...
A painful lesson
My son the musician and recording engineer
The finer points of venipuncture
In stitches
Stay right there...don't move!
