Sean's Story
Life: the abbreviated life story of Sean Johnson
I re-discovered my yearbooks from Northside Junior High ('83 & '84), as well as my '86 & '88 yearbooks from Granby. Wow! I was engulfed by such conflicting emotions.
My life, then, was a performance; an exercise of mis-direction and concealment. I lived in a dark cloud.
Now, it's as if I've emerged from darkness. There's so much more meaning in life and in my interactions with the people around me. I try to connect with each person's humanity and to share my own in what may seem like the most trivial of moments. I've found that it makes everything so much easier. Yeah,I'm sure you're probably puking right now but I'm just a more positive person than I used to be.
I had been so selfish and unappreciative of everyone around me. I'm sure I seemed crazy (though I'll have you know the mohawk was not a reflection of madness!) but I was just experiencing a pain I could not articulate (cue the violins!).
Nowadays? Well, I returned to the U.S. in July of 2003 after living in Cairo, Egypt for 4 years. During that time I got my M.A. in Anthropology from the Amer...Expand for more
ican University in Cairo, traveled to India twice and to Ghana, West Africa numerous times, where I also have family. I connected with the paternal side of my family which I had not known existed until the late 90's. It has been wonderful, annoying, humbling, and inspirational. It answered so many questions I had about myself.
In June of 2004, I moved to New York, where I got the most amazing job as a developer of academic content for an organization that has built an online library of African cultural heritage.
I'd planned to return to D.C., where I'd moved after graduating from N.S.U. in '96. However, I was not really looking forward to being an ESL teacher again so, this was really an amazing opportunity I couldn't pass-up. It has afforded me the chance to continue my travels throughout Africa and Europe, allowing me to learn more about the world and myself; and that's what life is about: moving forward, learning and growing.
In 2013, I started working for the United Nations in New York. After thinking I would not make it after the first 3 months, I will be starting my 11th year in February 2024.
