Sean's Story
Life
Well this is a little strange. IÂve already located a few old friends that I had lost touch with. Kind of surreal actually. Of course that has nothing to do with my Bio...
Ok letÂs see. After graduation, I joined the Navy, and got stationed on a amphibious assault ship (Marine troop transport (USS Peleliu LHA-5 for you Navy/Corps geeks)) home ported in Long Beach, CA. I toured the Pacific on the Peleliu and saw many of the naval battle sites of WWII, as well as visited several asian countries. Then I was transferred to Bangor Sub Base where I spent the first Gulf War, activating reservists and sending them off to serve in Desert Storm. During my time in the Navy I subsequently lost touch with most of the people from High School; which was either a blessing or a curse. IÂm not sure overall about the Navy, sometimes I feel like itÂs the best thing that I wish I had never done, and IÂm glad I got out, and at other times, I wish that I had made it a career. Then again, if I had made it a career, my life would be so different now, that perhaps my perspective on it would be completely different.
Anyway, after crossing the Pacific twice, I returned to Seattle, got married, got divorced, got beat up by life, and went back to school (UW), where I finished my BA in History in 1998. I also met a nice French girl, got married again, and kind-of learned to speak French, but we havenÂt moved to Paris, yet (where at least they have socialized medicine!)Â
Oui! Je sais cÂest bizarre, parce que les langues etrangere ne sont pas faciles pour moi! Along the way I became a furniture maker/cabinet maker, specializing in antique reproductions, and worked off and on for others or myself for 10 years or so, making really nice stuff for people who generally underappreciated fine craftsmanship. Then in 2000, we moved into an old decaying 1923 Craftsman house in Ballard, which we then rebuilt from the inside out and the foundation up.
Just in time to sell it and move to New York City to go to law school. The Big Apple was ok, but y...Expand for more
ou know what they say, get out of NYC before it makes you hard, and it's a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. What with the monstrous traffic, NYC attitude, cost of living, ridiculous taxation, idiotic politics, massively overpriced-bubble-economy real estate, miserable winters of constant snow shoveling, insufferable summers blistering heat and humidity and torrential downpours, I donÂt understand why 23 million people live in the NYC area! But itÂs a nice place to visit!Â
ItÂs also very strange to live in the city of Ground Zero, as every time I go to Manhattan the loss of the towers is very ÂpresentÂ. This happens because you either pass by the site, or you are in the financial district only a few blocks away and have to choose whether you want to pass by and see the crowds of people flocking to the pilgrimage site. Or, in what is most likely and most strange, and what most people outside of NYC donÂt know, is that because the towers were so tall, and they could be seen from as far north as parts of Harlem, they served as a visual landmark of which direction was uptown or downtown when you initially emerged from the subway and were trying to figure out which direction you had to walk. So for lots of New Yorkers they are literally visually reminded of 9/11 every time they come out of the subway. Its also surreal because one only has to live here a short time before you gain friends who lost a family member in 9/11.
I finished law school early (2,5 yrs), and we moved back to the land of coffee, and bought a little house in North Beach with a nice view. And after passing the bar and getting admitted I am now looking to start my own solo-practice. Unless of course we take off for Paris... Drop me a line, IÂd love to hear from you... And to all of you, who remember me as BoBo the Clown, yes I still do that once in a while.
