Dean's Story
Life
Hey Gang! Long time no see... after living near Washington D.C. for a couple of years after high school, I found myself back in Sacramento at the very end of 1989. After trying a few different things that disproved the old yarn about "Do what you love and the money will follow," I became a bane on society and joined state service in 1995. I currently work as a publications writer/editor for the Board of Equalization.
In 2008, I find myself single again after a long term marriage that just didn't work out despite our best efforts. While there are still some adjustments to be made, my life is really good. My 10-year old son is simply awesome and when I became a Dad, it was one of the few things in life that I just felt like I was built to do.
I still tinker with cars and motorcycles and most other things mechanical. I'm still obsessed with music and although it has been awhile as of late, I'm still gigging around Sacramento, touring small amounts-we went to Japan in 2003- and releasing CDs every so often with my band The Decibels. If you are curious, there are some songs from the CDs up on myspace. It's just myspace"dot" com "slash" thedecibels
I occasionally write freelance articles for different publications- I did music reviews for Scoot Quarterly for a few years, have published a couple of articles in Go Metric! Music Magazine and frequently contributed to RUST Magazine (R.I.P.) as well, although that work concentrated mostly on vintage drag racing and other D.I.Y. guerilla hot rodding pursuits. I goof around quite a bit with graphics and layout and I am a certified "font geek" for those who can relate to my particular addiction to typefaces. I'm currently doing layout and production for a couple of club magazines.
Yes, I'm still an anachronism- very much into things from the 1920's-mid 1960's and I still dig out my old...Expand for more
punk rock records from time to time, although I follow (the best I can, given time constraints) a lot of the underground indie bands on a constant search for great music to listen to.
So far I have managed to brainwash my kid into digging the Ramones and the Beatles and Beach Boys. Let's hope it remains his foundation of taste to build on. ;-) Having a kid also allows me to use the ol' "bonding experience" reason to revisit the hobbies I had as a kid, so I'm finding that my son and I goof around from time to time with everything from baseball, to old go karts to BB guns to model rockets and a lot of other stuff in between. It's great to share and see the interests I had through my son's eyes. Like I said, bein' a Dad is a goog gig! ;-)
Other than that, life just keeps moving along! I'm grateful for the opportunity I have to continue to learn and to grow. Even though there is a thread of continuity that still ties me to who I was in high school (yes, I'm still a major goofball) I'm certainly glad I'm not the exact person I was then... I know, who is?
I'd really like to hope those authentic qualities I had back then are the ones that still remain, and hopefully over the years I've stripped away the BS. I feel like I am a perpetual student of life, and it's just my nature to be curious and to question and to search for meaning, and to hopefully become a better, kinder and more compassionate person as life unfolds.
I hope you all are doing well- I don't often dwell on high school days, but when I do, I remember so many of you that I perhaps only ever had one class with during the whole time we were at EGHS. I certainly wonder "what ever happened to..." with all of you. If you ever feel compelled to satisfy my curiousity, please feel free to e-mail me and tell me what you're up to. I'd really welcome it!
All the very best to you!
