Katie's Story
Life
Didn't go to RAM long, but remember many people from that time. For someone who couldn't care less about High School and what happened there, I found my niche when I got to a place where I could work at my own pace. I ended up going to Long Beach School for Adults (you remember that night school that was at Wilson?) and ended up graduating about 9 months ahead of time.
I met my husband in 1978, in a bar (on a fake ID no less)! Everyone said it wouldn't last, but now they are all on their second (or third, or fourth) marriages and we've just celebrated our 28th anniversary! You'd never know it to look at him (take a look at our family pic), but he is the conservative one!
I went to LBCC for a little while and finished most of the pre-nursing core going on a part time basis while I had 4 kids in between (and one in high school - [yep, I'm that one]). I realized then that I had a talent for anything biology.
We moved to Prescott, Arizona, a lovely little town in the mountains in Northern Arizona, in 1990 so that my husband could be closer to his family and I continued my Junior College credits at Yavapai College. I worked at Yavapai Regional Medical Center in the Intensive Care Unit as a Unit Coordinator, while attending classes, and finally decided that I had seen enough of the nurse's job to decide that I didn't want it! I changed my focus to Psychology. Having battled cancer twice put things on hold for a little while, but I got back on track and graduated with honors, Phi Theta Kappa and moved to Phoenix in 2000. While at Yavapai I served as a peer tutor and proctor for a brilliant man who was the head of the Anatomy and Physiology department. Perhaps the single most brilliant man I have ever known, Dr. Roy Bronander, shaped my educational goals by instilling in me the belief that I had the capacit...Expand for more
y to attain any goal I set for myself and to never - ever aim too low or underestimate myself or my intelligence. Sadly, he passed away from a brain tumor in 1998 with his wife and children at his side.
I attended ASU and earned a BS in Psychology with a focus on Domestic Violence and Child Abuse, with a minor in Criminal Justice Studies/Forensics. Worked for a while for CPS and a domestic violence shelter while working on and earning my MSW (Masters in Social Work). While at ASU I served as Vice President and Webmaster of Psi Chi, the national honor society for Psychology, became a member Golden Key and Phi Kappa Phi. I graduated college Phi Beta Kappa. Who would have thought that the girl who ditched classes to go surfing almost on a daily basis would turn out to be sooooo serious!!
Also,at ASU I wrote an Honors thesis entitled Victim Perception of Mandatory Intervention Policy in Cases of Domestic Violence which utilized a survey instrument that will be used in an upcoming published article in the publication "Violence Against Women: by Alissa Smith. The article will be a follow up to an article she did entitled "It's My Decision, Isn't It?" If you are interested in this topic, please look up the article. It will give you a new understanding of how victims feel about the way they are treated when they report their abuse. It is not uncommon for women to be repeatedly "mistreated" by the very system in place to help them. Prosecutors, police, advocates, shelters, etc. have repeatedly failed them.
[Just a little editorializing there!]
Anyway...I tried to go to a couple of Millikan reunions, but was told that since I didn't graduate from Millikan I didn't qualify as an alumni - go figure! Maybe since the next one is outdoors at a public park, I'll make it without having to meet "entrance requirements."
