Shannon's Story

Life I was told when doing this to put things i was proud of and stuff about my career, so that is what I will be doing. I am most proud of graduating from High School and College. When i was younger knowing I had a learning disability I was told I would never be able to do it. I proved to myself and all the doubters with hard work and a bit of help I could do it. Have worked hard at my teaching jobs and love working with all the 2 to 6 year old children. I love children and this has been a dream of mine to work with them and it finally came to be One other thing I am proud of is being a very loving Aunt to my two nephews and little niece. College I first started college out of high school in 1990. I went to Victor Valley college for two years. My major there was Child psychology. After two years there I had to stop going to school to work full time so I could pay for my apartment. Around 1995 I decided I wanted to finish college and get a degree working with children. I then quit my job and moved to Santa Maria, Ca. where my Dad and Step-mom were living and started going to Allan Hancock College where my major turned to education. I went to this school for quite awhile, but I didn't mind being there as long as I was because I learned a lot, met a lot of great people and got to have some fun. I played on the Tennis Team for two years and that just made me enjoy my time there more. I made it on the deans list once and was very proud of keeping my grades up. Got 6 scholarships from the college. This was so awesome. I was able to get those because I kept up my 3.0 GPA and kept up my full load of classes. It was tough but so rewarding. When I finished college I ended up with...Expand for more
a Associates in Science degree and graduated with a 3.49 GPA. A tenth of a point away from graduating with honors. Workplace After graduating college I got a job at a Preschool. It was so wonderful working with the kids. I was teaching them, but it was the children that gave me everything; I learned so much from each one of them. They were all so sweet and caring and just wanting to know everything. I have always adored children and one of the reasons why is because they are open to new things and want to take in all they can. I did my best to fill those little minds with things they would need to be able to do well in all areas of learning. The owner closed the school a few years ago,(school has been closed for 6 years), and I must say I am missing my students. They were all so young, I often wonder what they look like now at 4 and 8 years old's. My rewards of being at that job, were teaching the children as best as I could and being able to get through to a young Autistic boy that nobody had been able to reach. I was able to forge a strong bond with him and I hope after he left the school he didn't close up again. I had just gotten him where he could focus some on others. All the children were true joys to work with. I would call them my little Angels, because that is what they are to me. Precious Angels. 2005 to present: I now work for a Preschool called "It's A Child's World" I have worked here for almost 4 years now. The funny thing about where I work is that it is in the same exact building as the the Learning Tree was in. In all these years I still find it rewarding to be able to shape young minds and get them ready for their jump into Grade school and beyond.
