Shannon's Story
I was born in Douglas, Wyoming. I moved around alot because my Dad worked in the oil industry. A few years after my parents divorced, my mom moved us to San Diego, CA where I went to High school and some college.
At the age of 20 I was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa. It's a gentic eye disease which makes black or brown spots that cover the retina of hte eye starting from the outside of the eye and moves its way to the center of th eeye. I've been slowly losing my sight since the age of eight. I have beaten the odds the eye doctor gave me and have stayed pretty stable for the last six years.
I went to the Braille Institue and I learned to read and write braille, I was also a volunteer teacher for a year and a half. A year after being diagnosed, I went back to Mira Costa Community College.

illings, Montana. I was accepted to the University of Montana State Billings where I am a Junior and working on my Bachalors of Science in the Human Services field. My goal is to get a graduates degree as a Rehabilitation Specialist in Computers for the Blind.
I found out what I wanted to do in life after my stay at a Independent Living School in LA. It was a six month program, and I completed the program in 2 months. My instructor said I need to get into the field of assistive technology.
Since my diagnosis my life has changed a lot. I do walk witha cane if I do lose more sight then I will look into a guide dog but for now I love my cane.
I'm not as shy as I use to be, and I can be a little too independent at times. I have been able to adapt very well to what the good lord had given me and losing my sight has made me a stronger person.
