Sharlie's Story
Sharlie is from Jackson, Michigan. Lived in Niles and Grand Rapids before moving to Kazoo in 1959. I attended Hillside Jr High and Central High School.
Abbreviated storyâ¦.After leaving Kazoo in Aug of 65 for an office job with the Federal government in Washington DC, within two months I met my future husband. He was in the Navy and shortly headed off to a ship off the coast of Vietnam. My mother became very ill and I moved back to Kazoo in Feb of 66 to take care of her and she died the night I arrived home. I stayed in Kazoo for about five months to get my dad and older brothers back on their feet and then I moved back to DC. Was married in Oct of 67 and my only child, a daughter Kat, was born in 73 and I was a stay-at-home mom for the next 12 years. Went back to work in 86 and divorced in early 87. Came to the realization that I was gay in 92 and have been much happier and more at peace with myself ever since. ear my daughter and her family in the foothills just west of Denver. I have one granddaughter, Sedona, who is almost seven. With the job market being terrible in 2007/08 and my being somewhat incapacitated by two knees sorely in need of replacement, I went on medical disability/retirement in 2009. Had both knees replaced at the same time and after a little healing time, continued to help take care of Sedona. She is in first grade now and besides reading and settling into my new apartment, I need to find some new hobbies. Diagnosed with cancer Mar 2015 and had bilateral mastectomy in April. Fortunately, no chemo or radiation needed. After trying one of the recommended meds and having severe side effects, I decided no drugs for me and I'm trying to take care of myself naturally. Sedona is now almost 8 1/2 and will finish 2nd grade in a couple of months. Usually, in the summer, I have her all day, 2 days a week and by the end of summer, I am exhausted. Last year was the worst as I was still recuperating from my surgery, so hopefully this year will be better.
