Sharon's Story

Mel and I just celebrated our 43rd anniversary with supper at our favorite restaurant complete w/flowers...what a romantic! We have 3 sons & daughters-in-law, 8 grandchildren-6 girls and 2 boys ranging in age from 2 yrs. to 18 years...I am a professional photographer, specializing in high school sports photography, sr. picts., and extreme bull riding picts. We are currently trying to retire from farming, so that means only 14 hour days instead of 16 hour days...HA! To relax I take a walk...pray...get somewhere quiet and think about God's wonderful gift of creation and His awesome love for me. My hero is a lady who recently passed away from cancer and her unshakable faith that God was walking the walk with her and the awesome peace of God that she displayed, and her gentle caring for others. My other hero is my dad, who, after unsuccessful back surgery was completely paralyzed from the neck down. His total peace from God and his courage while facing certain death, his love for his family, and his last words to me, "I see Jesus", before he died will be forever burned into my mind. My passion is photographing sporting events, my grandchildren, and also extreme bull riding events. I follow the bull riding circuit close to home. I am challenged to become a better photographer because of the ever changing lighting conditions and the split second action occurring in these events. My biggest surprise has been the God-given ability to handle adversity...we have had a lot of things happen in our married lifetime, and with God's never unfailing grace which is so very sufficient, we have come through everything from fires, tornadoes, physical situations, family situations, health and accident issues and business stresses...stronger in our faith in God, and love for each other. We have had an interesting 43 years together to say the least. Updates: It is now 2012; 3 years since that last update. Our youngest son, Mike, his wife, Char and their two little ones moved back from Penn. last Sept and lived with us up until two weeks ago, 10 months. Char and I are complete opposites in personalities, but with God's grace we got along pretty well and remain good friends. It's been an interesting 3 years. I have had to have 3 major surgeries in the past 2 1/2 years. The last being knee replacement. It's not been an easy time, but, again, God's amazing grace, my wonderful husband who gave me excellent care and my daughter-in-law who did a lot during my recovery for me as well as friends who brought meals...A year ago May we found ourselves visiting England, Ireland, and Scotland along with good friends on a tour group. It was an amazing trip, I was able to track my family history in Scotland, and enjoyed touring London and of course, Herards by myself. The trek up the steep hills to see the castles in Scotland is what did my knee in, but thanks to a homeopathic pharmacy in London, I was able to keep up . What a fun trip. Our first out of the country. We will be taking another granddaughter on a trip next month, when the grandchildren turn 13 we take them on vacation. We horseback ride, white water raft, visit historic sites, and have a ball with our grandchildren building lifelong memories. September with find us in Denver...I have training for peacemakers (out of Billings Mont.) for three very long days, and then we have a wedding about an hour north of Denver in the mountains. We are looking forward to both trips. Hopefully my knee will keep up... We had two granddaughters graduate high school this past May, both are going on to be RN's. Our oldest granddaughter with be graduating in Dec from nursing school, and May from college, and she will be an RN hoping for a job at Mayo as a nurse on the surgical floor taking care of patients who come back from surgery. Hot, dry summer, could use several inches of rain for the crops. Take care..Sharon May 26th, 2013; We are finally having spring, (or the end of winter as several weeks ago we had 14 inches of heavy, wet snow, Someone turned the waterworks on and now our ground is all caught up and we are no longer in drought. Our oldest son, Mark only has 50 acres in the ground and is glad he took out the insurance which will pay for the unplanned corn acres as it is getting late and with the rain we are receiving it will be at least a week before he can get in on the tiled ground. Mel and I are in good health, enjoying his semi-retirement of only 12 hours a day...sometimes less. We will have Mike's two kids next weekend for 2 1/2 days of which we plan to visit Iowa & Spring Valley Little House museums. Their parents have been reading the series to them at bedtime. I still enjoy photography, but I limit it to senior pictures and newborn picts for Rachel's hope clients. Fun, fun, fun. Mel and I also enjoy target practice when it isn't raining. We are going to ...Expand for more
Alaska soon with a group, a place I've been wanting to go to for several years, and I found a way to take all my photo gear with...forget the luggage! HA! 2015: Haven't decided if we are coming to the reunion or not. We now have a 7th granddaughter, Ziva Grace born May of 2014 to our youngest son, Michael and his wife Char. That makes a total of 9 grand-kids. I really didn't think we would have blessed with another grandchild, and was looking forward to being Great-Grandma some time in the future, but God is full of surprises and we were blessed with this little one, who, now is crawling all over the place. She delights in my small dog, Sophie, a Yorkie. We are planning on a trip this summer to explore North and South Dakota for about three weeks. We just recently returned from Cancun, Mexico, trying to bring some of the warmth back with us to no avail. Mel has put into place his plan for full retirement this summer, so hopefully all will go smoothly with that. Our oldest granddaughter was married last June, 2014, she also is an RN at Mayo's St. Mary's hospital, having graduated with her 4-year degree. She is loving her job and married life. Both Mel and I have mom's still living. Mel's mom, Violet will be 93 in May and my mom celebrated her 92 birthday last December. Both are in fairly good health for their age, although Mel's mom has Alzheimer's, but is stable and still living in her own home with 24/7 care. Mel and I are in good health and Mel will always be involved in the farm, even retired, and I am involved in Peacemaking and Freedom in Christ ministries through our church working with people in conflict, and those bound by issues and un-forgiveness in their lives, as a layperson. October 2015: Our three week vacation was narrowed down to about 9 days, enjoyed camping and visiting the missile sites in South Dakota and Devil's Lake in North Dakota. Lots to see and do. Good thing we cut our trip as when we arrived home the sump pump was beginning to burn up. It's been a busy, dry fall, the dust being unbearable for those of us with breathing problems. I've taken to wearing a mask when I go outside. I am now training under a psychologist to become a lay counselor at our church.... April, 2016: I can't believe that Mel and I will be celebrating 50 years of marriage this August, along with many of you! As Mel said, it has been quite a trip! Who would have ever thought that this city girl and that country boy could make it work for so long, but with God's help, love and commitment to each other, we will be celebrating with an open house at the Hormel Nature Center, June 26th, 2016, from 4 pm to 8 pm in Ausitn Mn. Exit 180B, north 1/4 mile, driveway on the right. If anyone cares to come you are surely invited to surprise us! We have a block of rooms available at the Holiday Inn, ask for rooms under YFA. We are expecially looking for Don Bettenhausen and Karen White-?. If anyone knows where they are please message me. Thanks. Hopefully some will see this! We found Don, now we need to find Karen. Just 3 weeks left until our 50th celebration! Can't believe it's the end of 2019! I'm ready for this year to end, as it's been difficult. Mel's youngest sister, Donna, was killed in a head on crash on Dec 21, 2018, She was 59. We miss her sooo much. January 2019 we went ahead with a scheduled trip to Hawaii With our Oldest son, Mark, his wife, Nicole, daughters Whitney (Alex) and Celina (Trevor). We had a week of fun with all of them, Mel went hiking with the younger set and Mark, while Nicole shopped and I hung out....Mel and I drove around the island several times, sightseeing! We did all of the usual tourist things. After the kids and grand kids left for home, Mel and I boarded a ship and island hopped, we had so much fun seeing all the sights. Six days after coming home I ruptured the L5 disk in my back, and that began a rough journey full of pain and physical therapy. One top of that, I developed a kidney stone and found myself in emergency surgery on Easter Sunday. I had everything planned for dinner that day, so we told the kids and grand kids to come and eat, even though we weren't there.. We are the proud great grandparents of a little boy, James (Rose and Dillon), and Raegan, (Celina and Trevor). What beautiful babies they both are. fun for this grandma to play with and hold. in September I was well enough to go on a trip with the travel club from our electric coop to Vancouver, touring the city and gardens, and then a 2 day train ride to Banff, Then a bus ride to Calgary. There was wonderful food, beautiful scenery, mountains, glaciers to walk on. It was a wonderful trip. Unfortunately, a week later I developed another kidney stone, So, as you can see, it's been a tough year, but again God's grace was so evident and Mel took wonderful care of me. I hope all of you are doing well.
