Sharon's Story

I graduated from Spaulding High School in 1970....from Plymouth State College, class of 1974...BS in Elem. Ed......taught 1st and 2nd grade 2 yrs.....Nurses Aide in Nashua, NH 2 yrs.....worked in ofc as Sec./Rept. 9 yrs...have worked at FedEx for last 30 yrs as Courier/Driver out of Portland, ME...my current route is in Bath and Phippsburg, ME...I'll probably be there 'til I'm 95......My grandmother is still alive and if she makes it to June 3rd, she'll be 110 !!!!!! I remember we had 2 intersecting brooks in the woods behind our house and my brother, Larry and his friend Ronnie Cormier made a tarzan swing across the biggest brook(which we named the Big Brook)...We used to have a lot of fun swinging across that brook and jumping off the other side. (We occasionally found some quite large snapping turtles at that brook...wouldn't have felt good on the toes.) Ronnie used to make his own homemade spears and shoot them at our bare feet. What a renegade. I also remember my cousins coming from Florida one summer and going down to the brook to try the swing out. One of my cousins, Lorraine, wasn't sure how to do it so she took hold of the knot...the one we usually sat on.....and ran for it.....she went under the water....back up....back under....well, you get the picture. We laughed like hell and haven't stopped since. She hasn't forgiven us to this day. She still gets mad when we bring it up. I love her, but she'll still get mad if I mention it....Those were the years...... My first job was at Jerrys' Shop 'n Save, where I got paid ???????? to cashier. What I remember most about it is my best friend, Maryanne Comfort. I wish we had kept in touch over the years. I'd like to reconnect with her. I also remember climbing Mt. Washington with a group of co-workers, including Gary George... we had a great time. Pay was lousy 'though, but we were the bottom rung of the ladder. Gotta start somewhere.. I met Maryanne Comfort when I worked at Jerrys' Shop 'n Save 1969-70...we clicked because she was shy and easy to talk to...she was nonjudgemental and friendly...she was never out to prove anything to anyone and wasn't a gossiper....I felt comfortable sharing anything with her because I knew it would stay with her......I've since found that people like her are not the majority and I'm really sorry I didn't keep in touch with her. Most of my friends have been guys because I feel more comfortable talking to them. Maryanne was an exception to that rule. In 10 years, I hope to be retired. I'm going to get there by the year 2525. (Update...I'm retiring Nov. 30, 2017....I'll miss my full retirement date by 4 months, but I can't make it another Christmas peak with FedEx...it's a brutal time of year and I'd like to ❤️C...Expand for more
hristmas again..it's been a long time since I have😂🎄) 1990 I won the NH State Straight Truck Driving Championship...I was sent to Dallas, TX to compete in the Nationals and came in 16th out of 43....the other 42 were guys...I was the only girl in the State competition also in that class....It was a very proud moment....in earlier years I had won 16 trophies driving dune buggies, the 1st year they had the tt-track at Loudon...I won overall for the season in 1980-81.....great fun!!! I share my home with my husband, Bill, my elderly mother, Mary Winchell and 5 cats, which I find very rewarding and very challenging at the same time.. Well, considering the job I have, most of my clothes now consist of FedEx uniforms...otherwise I like to look nice, but I don't overdo it....a nice looking blouse, sweater, jacket and pants suit me best.....once in awhile I'll wear a dress, but only if my husband dresses up too. I'm not going to if he wears jeans and sneakers...... I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were hmmmm......well it didn't pay that well for the work you put into it, so I moved on and got out from behind the walls........get to meet people and places and also get a lot of fresh air.....(the winter is quite challenging and I always had fairly good language, but when you get stuck out in the middle of nowhere and your cell phone signal doesn't carry there are always exceptions............:-) If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have coffee, coffee, and you guessed it, coffee to be able to deal with the day-to-day. I love cats, always had them....always will.....until they drag me, kicking and screaming to a nursing home!!! If I could improve my home, I'd remodel my basement & install new windows and add on a sunroom & garage. My dream home would be well landscaped. (Update 8/27/17...we'll we managed to install the new windows and build a couple of decks, but still no garage, sunroom or landscaping...I'm adding one thing to my wish list for retirement..a John Deere or Kubota riding mower with a cart..that should help me with the landscaping😊...hope you read this husband😅) If I won $100 million, I'd give 50% of it to charities, then spend the rest on paying off my bills, cushioning retirement and helping out family members feel secure. Well ok, maybe I'd better change the charity part to 25%.........:-). I'm starting to get the bigger picture here. My husband comes from a rather large family and I have 2 sisters, Kathy & Lainie who had 9 daughters between the 2 of them.....All 6 of Lainies' girls have children of their own....soooooo its' gonna take a little more to make everyone feel secure.....!!
